And donate to encourage the developers. I did a month ago. Always some cool and useful plugins.

Definitely the worst ever challenge, was not hard choosing a top 5 this time round, i suspect it just isn't worth developers time and effort anymore.

Yes I have to agree, a poor selection of plugins
The Roth Air is the only one I liked.
Disappointing.

Default SoftAmp PSA

I'm really liking the SoftAmp PSA ....

As an owner of the original SansAmp PSA-1 when it first came out in 1991, I never really moved past the presets and got into tweaking the knobs. With this emulation now I can experiment a bit with the various parameters and try to duplicate 'em on the hardware unit.

Kudos to AXP for this great entry

I thought the LaGrange delay offered something useful and different with a good UI. Also liked the Lord of the Springs VSTi, but I'm a sucker for that style of sound.

A few of the others looked like they might be good for niche uses, the Kontakt Microtuner and the FFT Randomizerfor example.

But I'd agree there's not as impressive a range of entries as in previous years.

Agreed, the feild does seem a little weak. It must be increasingly hard to not only dedicate time and finances but also to develop something that hasn't already been worn out. Another synth, another rompler, another kontakt library . I commend all who have entered. I love AXP's stuff as well as Full Bucket Music's synths. The bar on this kinda thing s pretty high and these guys continue to deliver.

Thanks and good luck to all.

~40 free plugins were released yesterday, and here we are being underwhelmed (myself included, to an extent).

We sound really rather spoiled, to be honest. I think it's not that this year's entries are underwhelming, but rather, that many previous years' entries were absolutely stellar. Nova, FerricTDS, and Multiply come to mind, among some other stuff that I'm surely forgetting.

It's always disappointing to see soundware and the like, that can only be used with paid plugins. I'm thinking of stuff like Reaktor ensembles, Kontakt libraries, and soundbanks for paid synths. And now this year, there's an entry that is basically a demo version of a commercial product. This all seems to go against the spirit of the competition which seems to be, in spirit, about freeware.

That said, this is all first impressions based on browsing the page. I haven't demoed any yet, so I'm not really being fair! I'm always excited for new xoxos stuff, as well as AXP, D.Smolken, Full Bucket, Nusofting, and other "mainstays" in the freeware realm.

Here's hoping some thorough testing brings out some diamonds in the rough!

Maybe after 18 years of VSTs we already made many of the most useful ones?

I downloaded and installed the audio repair/cleanup one and freely admit that 90% of what I got out of it was unrecognisably, incredibly LOUD squawking!

Maybe I should re-read the notes that came with it.....

Viagra was initially intended to treat heart disease.

Have you tried putting a fuzz pedal before it, and a cab sim after it? (the plugin, not the pill!)

Same here, but after twisting a few knobs and pressing some buttons it turns out that the initial default seems to isolate the noise and put it up front ... (and no, I don't mean with Viagra ) ... it's behavior seems a bit erratic, but maybe that's just the way it's supposed to operate.

I'm testing this on a heavily distorted concert recording made in the 70's with a small cassette recorder ... been trying to clean this up for years using ReaFir, Spline EQ, Exciters, Harmonic Enhancers, and anything else that can be thrown at it ... perhaps this plugin might help a bit. We'll see.

The funny thing about this challenge and how it failed miserably
Two of the major prizes were for the best Android or IOS entries......erm.......wait.....hmmmmm......oh shit, no IOS or Android entries hahahaha
I should have released 5 samples for a couple of Android and IOS apps, won the prizes haha

I tried the AXP PSA today and ended up widdling away for about three hours ... Tonnes of tones to dial up.

I was very impressed, particularly the variable "shape" knob on the speaker sim.
Basically, set to 12 o'clock, it sounds marshally, and at full up it sounds mesa-ish.

Very Classy amp simulation

That's really cool! I've been looking for a PSA-1 plugin that can be used outside of Pro Tools for ages.

Any chance of a version that works on macOS so I can actually use it?

Thanks!

I've just uploaded a user manual. It's in the same .zip file with the DLL's.

Mac version would become a reality if I win one of the JUCE licenses

I'd love to get my mits on the 49 factory preset settings, either as fxb for SoftAmp, or even just a description of the parameters so i can knock out an fxb myself.

I found a couple of sites that hint at them, but none has explicit parameter settings.

I'd like that too. I used the same approach for SoftAmp GT
I should warn you that some knobs may have slightly different range/mapping.

Hello guys I'm the developer of Spaceship Delay, released for the KVR DC 16.

I didn't have a lot of time to work on the UI unfortunately (I'll update the UI after the voting period however), but implemented a lot of cool things inside :
  • All the basic stuff you would want from a delay (delay time in ms, in beats, feedback, ping pong mode, modulation, presets...)
  • A spring reverb I measured from a Dynacord Echocord Super 76 tape delay device
  • A nice freeze function that can be used to transform the delay into a looping
  • A filter section with the modeling of a Monotron Delay filter and of the Meeblip Anode I had some time ago, modelled from the schematics. I remember very well how the Monotron Delay sounds, and I really loves to make it saturate with feedback !
  • A nonlinear section with a tube preamp model + a bitcrusher
  • The attack mode from Guitar Gadgets to feed the delay line only when you attack hard the strings of the guitar for example
  • Some post FX (filters and a phaser)
  • A tutorial embedded in the plug-in with the manual and some nice tricks or anecdotes about delay in general
I hope you'll enjoy it ! You can grab it here : http://www.kvraudio.com/product/spac...ntropy/details

I have talked also about the "making of" on my new blog : https://musicalentropy.github.io/

Left a horribly mis-spelled comment on your site - what I MEANT to say was that I was looking forwards to making some pleasing noises with the plug!

Between arthritic hands and being useless at touch typing, I sometimes have to fix more typo than the total of letters in what I was trying to type!

Good luck in the challenge

Very cool plugin indeed! Thank you!

I'm not sure if you're allowed to change/add things anymore, but two things came to mind that could be improved IMHO:

1. The filter section in Feedback mode should also affect the first echo(s), because if the difference is too big between filtered and non-filtered sound, then the feedback mode is kind of useless I think... I'm not sure about the signal flow in this mode, but would the following work for example?
Code:
In - Delay - Filter - Modeling
   ^----------------v
2. Option to reverse ping pong panning?

Again thanks for the cool freebie and good luck in the contest!

Thanks guys !

I don't have the right to change everything befire the end of the voting period, but then I'll do it, I got tons of feature requests and I have a couple of ideas I didn't have time to implement...

That's exactly what happens in "main mode" The point of the feedback mode is not to do anything on the first echo, like what happens in some tape/analog delay devices

Ahh I see. Would it be too much trouble to add a third mode that includes the filter in the feedback chain but also processes the first pass of echo?

Hmm just thought of another thing... it would be cool to have the resonant low pass filters have an optional envelope follower attached to them... well, just some ideas.

Thanks again for this nice freebie!

That means that you would like the first echo to be processed once, and then the other ones twice ?

The signal chain in main mode is :

Code:
input -> + -> delay line -> filter -> output
         ^----------------------------v
In feedback mode, that's it :

Code:
input -> + -> delay line -> output
         ^-----<- filter <--v
If you want a third mode which still processes the first echo, that would be that :

Code:
input -> + -> delay line -> filter -> output
         ^-----<- filter <------------v
And so every echo after the first would be processed twice.

I'm going to add features in the modulation section which is quite empty for now, after the voting period

Ahaa ok I had a feeling that I might have misunderstood the signal flow. I thought the Main mode was
Code:
input -> Filter + -> delay line -> output
                ^------------------v
As in the current Main mode it's inside the feedback loop, it's already doing what I was requesting. Don't need two filter stages in there :P

By the way, would the above mode with the filter before the loop be feasible? I was thinking about modulating the resonant lowpass filters to send squeals to the feedback loop, and keeping the treble intact for the subsequent repeats.

I'll see what I can do, it's difficult to keep the whole thing as simple as possible and adding new features I'm probably going to add switches to the post FX for example, so they can put at different places of the signal path... I could do the same for adding extra locations for the filters

I started playing with it last night.. I LOVE IT. I've been looking for a good VST delay with a freeze function - and this is perfect.. also lets me mangle the freeze loop. All those Skinny Puppy vocal tricks!

Giddy up ...

https://stash.reaper.fm/v/29138/vst-A...0PSA%20x64.ini

All 49 factory presets

Put the .ini file in your /presets folder, and SoftAmp x64 should then have them available in the preset dropdown menu.

Rpl and fxb are coming soon.
