I also don't understand what the problems are being presented here. If you zoomed too far, your sensitivity is too high on your scroll wheel? But if you did, why is zooming back in a difficult or annoying task?

I'm a zoom to mouse cursor user, and I've not encountered the problems. The gifs in the thread look like normal behaviour to me.

What am I missing?

When zooming out and everything slams to the right side of the screen, I'm asking what is the concept/utility/purpose of that behaviour.

Especially in MacOS on a trackpad, you can lightly flick the trackpad and the inertia/ballistics/(whatever_it's_called) mechanism will shoot the zoom to outerspace.

If there is a single MIDI item in the MIDI Editor - what possible utility is there for being able to zoom to measure 700,000?

I can see what they mean with the MIDI editor thing if just mousing about, but for the arrange thing, you can just put a "cap" on the project time so it doesn't zoom all the way out to bar 8 million if that bothers you & just set your default to something sensible.

Not that that stops you manually dragging stuff past that time, but it won't play/record & you'd have to manually scroll to retrieve it if it ends up there, the zoom stops there, unles you move the edit cursor and zoom in there I think? been a while. sometimes I do this to store items for future use and experimentation.

Wont help with the midi thing I don't think though.

For sure, but if you use other DAWs it will intelligently "put a cap" in a sensible place, which is sort of an easy problem to solve.

In the MIDI Editor, the cap is obviously the edge of the item being edited.

In Project View, the cap is less obvious but reasonably it could be something like "20% past the edge of the last item in the project".

Like, a steering wheel stops turning when it hits the edge of how far the tires can turn. If it allowed you to keep spinning it infinitely, we'd ask ourselves "but why?".

Yeah, would be handy if you could set it to a mode where the MIDI editor just opened up the take with the bounds of the item as the limit, like when you set it not to extend the item when you drag a note edge past the bounds.

Like I said I think I've been working around things for so long that I hardly ever zoomscroll in the midi editor, or very minimally if at all.

if REAPER's zoom was a good a steering wheel, it wouldn't go whiff out of the window while i'm driving

(I'm -think-the "+1" means I add my vote, correct?)

I wasn't looking for this discussion, but am VERY glad I'd stumbled into this!

I sigh every time it "slammed" to the right -way past the end of the track.
It's been that way, pretty much forever...so I try not to zoom, at all.
That's -my- workaround.

Changing timebase of midi editor to "sync to arrange" is helping in your scenario when u dock editor bottom BUT! it can make u unable to scroll to the begining if u dock someting else on the left side OR can behave strange in other window positions. CONCLUSION - try out, maybe it saves you or at least less irritate.

@edit:
this issue really inspired me so I hired my sense of humor for 5 minutes trying to image the solution:

I'm glad to find this discussion as I've been frustrated by this, for years.

I often work on a laptop, using the touchpad, so "scroll-wheel' options aren't available.

Changing "preferences>Editing behavior" hasn't seemed to do the trick...unless I'm not tweaking the correct parameters.

So far, seems actions may be the only workaround...
