+1!!! this has been an issue for years and I'm surprised nobody has fixed it yet! I love this DAW but the laggy play cursor has always seriously bothered me, and clearly a lot of other people feel the same way. Glad to see other people are still upset over about this, because I'm really hoping we can see this addressed soon :P

It seems the developer doesn't care about it. I can't find another explanation. This problem looks comical in 2021.

Personally, i use sRGB (the one at the bottom). Not all of the profile gives you high performance. I don't understand why this is such a guarded secret - it is necessary to do this if you are on macOS, yet you can only find out about it through obscure sources.

Thanks very much..... this worked for me. Macbook air m1.

As of February 11th, 2022, this still hasn't been fixed. It's been almost 7 years since this thread was made. It's kind of laughable that this kind of feature is not implemented yet.

The playhead smoothness may seem trivial, but in a long run it makes the music production process much more enjoyable...

Please Cockos add a feature to increase the playhead frame rate...

The same project in Cubase on this machine runs smoothly.

I 100% know what you mean. FL Studio, Ableton or Studio One playback projects I made in Reaper with an amazing GUI smoothness. Such a shame really, I love Reaper the most out of them all and when I finally realized what made the process feel "off" I just couldn't stay indifferent towards it anymore.

+1 for the fix, once again.

I've added an unofficial suggestion on Kenny Goia's feature vote website. Please, leave your vote in the link above!

The cursor in Musical Notation mode is also really hard to see if you are trying to use the sheet music to play along on a real instrument with whatever is playing in Reaper. Not only is it extremely jerky, but it would be great if you could make it thicker and extend above and below the staff as well.

Being able to have a high FPS cursor would be a game changer! See video link below for an example of how it looks in SoundSlice and how it really should be. But using SoundSlice your playing wouldn't be in sync with what is playing in Reaper.

This is how it should be

I just can't understand why the developer ignores this problem. Updates come often, but the problem still exists. Unbelievable! Is it so hard to fix it?

Just curious if anyone from the Reaper dev team has seen this thread? Would you mind sharing some feedback as of why this improvement hasn’t been considered?

The problem has dependencies with many aspects of Reaper, not just the gui.

Changing the refresh-rate alters the way Reascripts work and other aspects.

There's also the issue, that parts of Reaper as well as third-party-software may rely on the current behavior(which, as I said, covers more than the ui alone) and break, if the devs change this.

So this is a bigger problem than it looks like at first glance and solving it is actually a big deal.

So you either involve many months into trying to change it(and maybe failing, as the effects of the changes are too big) or you stick to the current way it is, at least for the moment.

I understand it may have some effect on other components, not sure about rea script impact though (a fellow software developer myself, c++, objc, ect). I love reaper, wouldn’t use any other DAW. That being said, I get the impression this issue isn’t being considered. Not complaining, it just has been a very long moment since this thread was started.

I'm pretty sure, it's more the complexity of the problem that needs more thinking before actually attempting any coding.
I doubt the devs don't see the benefit of the FR, but also the work and complexity involved in resolving dependencies that were a good idea back then, but are now stumbling rocks to circumvent.

But it's rather an educated guess, after I've seen some of the experiments of scripters who attempted to solve this via hacking the refresh-timer and found dozens of dependencies that relied on the timer that weren't ui-related.

Can we start a kickstarter for this or what?

I would pay $1000 for a REAPER with smooth, fully scalable GUI.

I'm on Windows 10, Alienware R7 (i7 16 GB RAM, SSD). I'm not experiencing this jittering playback head issue. I tested with Ableton Live, Studio One and Pro Tools. All seem perceptually very similar.

Testing in Reaper on my Mac Studio (M1 Max, 32 GB RAM) and I did get a bit of jitter but I probably wouldn't have noticed prior to seeing this post, though I don't really use that machine for recording.

There are so many variables that need to be normalized before trying to solve this problem. I think everyone "testing" needs to conform to the same settings, same zoom, and same project as a baseline before anyone will look into this. Maybe someone can take charge and put together a package with all of this info so each person having the problem is running under similar conditions. They should also list the hardware and OS they are using. Someone should collect this data, then present it.

I'm working many hours per day with reaper. GUI-wise I'm looking at bitwig and cubase quite jealously. It's an eye-candy. Modern and super clean. Reaper looks like a toy.

Idk let’s try to keep it constructive. I don’t think shaming the devs is really going to help.

nobody is shaming the devs. Sorry if it comes across as that. They make reaper the best DAW for me out there (and I tried them all). But of course, its not the best DAW in every single aspect, "just" the best overall. But of course there always will be room to improve and other DAWs do different things better (perhaps because they have a different focus). I just think the graphics in Cubase and especially Bitwig are just awesome. It's so much fun to work with it.

If you can change the peak render display refresh rate and meter refresh rate, this should be an option too, IMO. The stuttering in the midi editor is especially driving me a little nuts. I appreciate that audio is given priority in Reaper, but it's hard to look at this.

+1 !

What undiscovered bounties lie past the threshold of this dependency problem's resolution? I am intoxicated by visions of framerate. Attend, I implore you, O Cockos et al - attend, that your flock may lie in pastures of playheads. Amen.
