Default GRM Tools plugins crash

GRM Tools VSTs crash OSX Reaper at scan time. This is an especially bad crash from Reaper's perspective because:

- It only happens on the initial plugin scan, so as far as the user can tell, they install Reaper and it crashes right away the first time they run it.

- The plugins are distributed as a bundle, so even if the user perseveres and restarts Reaper, it just keeps crashing until all 6 or 8 GRM plugins have been scanned and crashed. Nobody is going to stick around that long.

The plugins crash when their code is loaded, before Reaper even has a chance to try to call into the plugin, so we can't debug this any further on our side.

I have send GRM a couple of emails with no response. If anyone reading this has actually purchased their plugins, could you please do us the favor of opening a support ticket or sending support email or whatever their method is, telling them the problem and asking them to please either look into it or contact support at cockos.com.

Thanks...

Here is some technical detail, which may or may not be of interest.

A user emailed with a similar problem with Blue Cat VST plugins crashing on scan, and provided a hint about what the problem might be. The issue is very similar to this problem with Audio Damage plugins, which was resolved.

On either OSX or Windows, applications and plugins may use run-time (dynamically loaded) libraries, meaning, they may rely on the user's system having a particular library installed.

Reaper relies on run-time libraries less than other hosts. It's likely that these plugins are calling into run-time libraries without first ensuring that the library is loaded. If an OSX VST developer only tests their plugin in Cubase, and Cubase already loads the library the plugin needs, the developer will never see the problem.

I purchased these for whacky resonant filter effects from *Steinberg* a long time ago (8 years perhaps!)

Although i've not given them much use in the end, they all still load and work perfectly on the pc with R3.35

Let me know if i can help in any way.

Schwa -- in the mean time, why not put up an 'advisory' notice if you detect GRM present and skip the whole damn bundle.

No news. It appears to be a bug in the plugin as far as we can tell. The same plugins crash the VST SDK example host. We have heard nothing back from GRM.

[edit] I suppose we will have no choice but to blacklist the plugins at scan time, which is a shame, because we have never had to do that before.

We have several copies of the GRM Tools in our studios. We sure would love to use them with Reaper. I'm gonna try to contact them too, see if I can get some info.

Such a shame they are truly powerful plugins but on both mac and pc I've seen nothing but crashes with them (plus bad pdc reporting).

Be nice if they worked though not much you can do though if GRM don't play ball

Would it help if we all sent an email describing the problem with grm and reaper? Might make them take note if a number of users are having the same problems?

Has anyone contacted Joel Chadabe at the Electronic Music Foundation? I would bet he's really the person to speak to, as this results in diminished sales for him.

I'm in Paris this week and will inquire among my acquaintances at IRCAM (Yes, I know GRM isn't IRCAM, but it's a small world) and see what I can learn, or communicate.

Best, Charles

I have found a bit of a workaround if anybody is interested. Use fxpansion vst to au wrapper to wrap the plugins as au. They will now open in reaper. The only problem is the graphical interface for the plugins will hide behind reapers fx window so you will need to drag this window and make it as small possible in order to see the grm graphic control. Apart from this error everything works as it should.

We never were able to stop GRM Tools plugins from crashing when Reaper scanned them n Mac. As of Reaper 3.4 (March 2010), GRM tools were blacklisted from Reaper OSX, so they won't be scanned at all and can't be loaded into Reaper.

We emailed GRM in February describing the problem. They got back to us about 6 weeks later, and we sent them some Reaper licenses and a special build of Reaper that has the blacklist disabled, so they could hopefully determine what the issue was. Unfortunately, we never heard anything else.

This post was from 2010.

Now that it's 2022, is there any news on GRM Tools and Reaper for Mac OS?

Do they work for PC?
