Default AM Radio in my monitors?

I'm running a Steinberg UR22 MK2 into two ESI nEAR 05 powered monitors. Three cables involved - two 1/4" lines and the USB to the computer.

I can hear a tiny sound from the speakers - just barely audible. If I put my ear up to it I can tell it's a radio station.

Doesn't matter what I do on the Steinberg, be it crank the levels or reduce them to zero, the sound is always there and always the same level. It's the darndest thing... I've replaced the cables.

Never happened before. I'm relying on USB power. Anybody see that with a grounding issue? Should I find a power supply for it?

Hah - never mind. Found it. I had changed my power configuration and now there's a power bar in between power to the PC and to the monitors. Moved them to a common source, and the radio signal vanished. Upon reflection, that power strip may be of questionable quality.

Wow, ground problems are neat.

What's funny is that it takes work and special software to do signal decoding from an antenna... but my ground problem dialed it in, no sweat.

There’s no software in an AM radio. Demodulation is basically just a filter and a rectifier. There are plenty of mechanisms for those signals to become audible in our gear.

Sorry, I meant for extracting it from the spectrum. I have an RTL-SDR with telescopic antennas and I use software to scan the various bands.

Just remarking on how neatly it hit one band dead centre (undistorted).

My background (from way, way back in 1992) included "Electronic Service Technician" - one year program learning to fix TVs, VCRs and... radios. Never made a living at that mind you... went straight into repairing computers.

So pretty recent then! I started my electronics career as a hobbyist in the late '50s. Now retired & back to being a hobbyist.
