Default Audio Config

Just did a new install on my new PC. Exported preference from laptop and imported them into new install. Here's the problem:

It sounds horrible! I am using MOTU 4 as my AI. Sample rate 4800. Same set up I had on my laptop. I started by using EZ Drummer 2. Sounds horrible. Thin. Distorted. Under Preferences, what should my Audio tab look like? Right now under Audio System have ASIO. ASIO driver I have my MOTU.

Any ideas? And it's ok to talk to me like I'm a toddler.

Thanks for any help!

Is 4800 a typo? Cause if not, that's your problem.. you'd want 48000 (add a 0).

If that's just a typo and you actually have it as 48000 in Reaper, I'd suggest you share a screenshot of your audio settings in Reaper for people to have a look. Also, probably helpful to mention what it says in the top right corner (ex. [48khz 24bit WAV: etc etc]). That will show what the audio device is set to.

You might check if the MOTU AI has a driver

Your first screenshot actually shows requested sample rate of 4800 (missing a zero.. should say 48000) in the Request sample rate box. That said, up in the top right, it shows your interface set at 48khz (48000), so I'm not sure if that's the problem or not. The setting seems to imply that it can override the sample rate of the interface, but on my setup it doesn't, for whatever reason.

I'd still definitely suggest changing that either to 48000, or just don't check request sample rate or request block size. As long as your interface is set to what you want for the sample rate and block size (it appears to be, from screenshot 2), that will be good enough.

Outside of that, if still an issue, I wonder if maybe you'll need to reinstall your drivers for the Motu. Did you actually install a driver for it when you connected it? It might be that whatever driver automatically installs is the right one.. I'm not sure. But if there's an updated ASIO driver on the Motu site definitely use that.

So here are my updated screenshots. I have no improvement in sound quality.

Per MOTU instructions, I downloaded the drivers prior to hooking MOTU 4 up to my PC.

Now select the MOTU driver (ASIO) instead of ASIO4ALL in Reaper Preferences - Audio Device
and see if it works.

The hatred for ASIO4all runs so deep here that even when you haven't mentioned it and your screenshots don't show it someone will still blame it for all your problems

How does it sound outside of Reaper....with Windows audio??

Or if you have any other software using ASIO how does that sound?

And are you testing on speakers and headphones and it's the same?

I appreciate you letting me know I was dealing with sarcasm.

Funny you ask the questions you did because all of my audio sounds distorted. I didn't notice it at first. Right after the build (PC) the audio was perfect. After I installed Reaper and my MOTU 4 I was so focused on the audio in my DAW I didn't even realize that all of my audio was now messed up. I can play a youtube video through my speakers or headphones and it all sounds the same. All of my audio had this distorted sound. I sounds exactly like the sound your audio has when it is clipping. Does any of this information help?

Thanks for the help!

Well it narrows down the issue a fair bit.

If the device still sounds normal on the laptop then it's some combination of the drivers and your computer. ALways worth trying alternative USB ports as well (and cable if not the same one you used on the laptop)

Oh..I doubt there was any intended sarcasm....probably Philbo just misread something or confused your post with another.
