Smallest, cheapest, portable monitors?
Hi all,
I need a super-cheap, super-small, portable pair of monitors to take to client's houses to listen to mixes off my laptop... They do not need to be reference quality, nor be able to 'wow' them with huge bass and volume - just good enough to give them an idea of what their mix will sound like 'in progress' (they will get the full show later on when it's ready it is just for 'brainstorming' about what they want, etc.
Thanks!
cheers,
Dan

Do they not have any speakers already?
What's your idea of "super-cheap" ?

Headphones.
You won´t get monitors that impress clients when going for small AND cheap. But that´s really what you have to do.

I was hoping in the $100-200 range... I just don't want to be carrying around anything more expensive that could get dropped, etc.
I prefer speakers, so we can just listen while we chat about what they want in the mix - more guitar, less drums, etc.
Thanks!
cheers,
Dan

You're sure not going to be able to get any speakers and properly set up a listening space for that budget. Emphasis on the setting up the listening space part!
If your client doesn't actually have their own sound system (seriously?!) then they need to trek to the studio.
Otherwise have them listen to roughs on their iThings (I'll assume that's what they are doing now). Give them a brief demo of what volume war CD releases sound like compared to more proper releases. Further, show them the same mix raw vs. volume boosted like that with some limiter. It's always fun to let them A/B and choose the better sounding version and then reveal it's the exact same mix. Then offer to slam the roughs if they need that. (ie. They only listen to volume war mp3s on iThings with ear buds.)
Sennheiser HD280 headphones are a lot of bang for the buck at $90.

Genelec? Well, for the purposes intended, to play stuff to people who don't already have decent speakers, and that need to be not too expensive that it's a problem if someone drops them, I'd suggest looking at some of the smaller behringer self powered speakers.

I understand the sentiment, but meanwhile, back in the real world...

For under $200 you can get speakers that will sound a millions times better than that in the most average listening space.

I'd take a look into the Sennheiser HD 598 or AKG K240.
Cheers.

Be carefull about the fake ones!
