What is meant by it "breaks" the Nvidia driver? I have the realtime kernel running and my graphics are fine, compiz still works, so the nvidia driver must be active. I don't get this.

breaks meant for me that the X server could not properly work, and that I was forced using a low res without acceleration, even after running the installer again.

you're lucky if it works!

Studio dave, thanks for the heads up on linux audio, I'll browse these articles for sure.

the only thing is that I have a rather small drive in my laptop (250) gigs, the biggest part of it is used by the damn vista install which I dual booted with ubuntu recently, but whenever I get some time, I'll format the hell out of this drive and install ubuntu alongside JAD, which looks nice on paper.

I also figured there were no linux drivers for my line6 gear, nor for the M-Audio Fast track ultra, nor for my korg nano and pad control, so I will keep on experimenting with linux, but perhaps not ditch windows quite yet.

Cheers !

SUCCESS!

I mighta guess. removed my desktop environment that was really making me groan at it's fluff ... then replaced with a simple tiling windows manager, removed all the extra sound stuff, now just old kernel embeded oss thing, WITH latest alsa and jack....

ran the linreaper installer defaults though used 3.0 alpha 1 and specified wine c:\reaper as install folder....

still got some of the messages though as expected it went ahead and completed...

So... a bit confused and need a tip or two I think...

nothing show ups when I select ASIO in reaper and look for what I expect should be in pull down menu ] I guess I'll try a reboot... thought don't think that will solve.

1) I have my .local folder nicely populated with all the right stuff and the shortcuts etc.

2) I bring up qjackctl.. so jack running...

3) I bring up reaper... though not sure it's the right install of it so tried both the locations I found it... YET... will look into it, though thinking there's really just the one install actual location unless I forgot something I did 2 weeks ago..

4) anyways nothing in asio pull down in reaper..

maybe I'll figure some more out right after I post this..

just raring to go hence this post!!! a bit pre-mature perhaps...though tips appreciated of course!

thanks! how cool!!!

SUCCESS TWO - the sequel!!

So... don't know what the fix was though I:

1) deleted the REAPER folder entirely in .local
2) allowed reaper to install to default location programs folder

done!

works great with version 3 alpha 2

now I'll try a win VST

this is getting VERY VERY interesting...

I've gone SO linux...

it's for me SO much more than windows ever could be...
Everything get's tweaked with text files, you can learn everything you thought you couldn't...and it feels so good...

um, that's not very technical I know though I've had an incredible 6 months going from a linux dabbler to an intermediate in many areas...

very worth studying linux I'd have to say.

So I think vista doesnt handle the disk streaming as well, but it's cpu is better (maybe because I have core 2 duo?)

Puppy 4.1 is not configured for multicore/SMP,but for single core CPUs.Even without SMP support,it's just as fast as an nLited Vista/XP but more stable.
Try it with a single core machine. You won't believe how fast it is.

The next release will have SMP support,so you'll notice a big improvement.

Ubuntu 8.04 rt kernels work fine, you could always start with a stock debian as well for your audio workstation. Dynbolic wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so darned ugly. Hard to look at.

Or even better - try the 'Fat Dog' derivative of Puppy:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38936

It has the latest (stable) multicore-optimized kernel, latest ALSA,a bit better GUI and tons of good apps like GIMP,Kompozer,Firefox with Flash 10,Sylpheed etc.

Only 120MB

Good news! The cutting-edge 'FatDog' is out and you can download it now.

Direct link: http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/kirk/Fatdog/iso/111/

mirror: http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/kirk/Fatdog/iso/111/

It's based on the latest (stable) 2.6.28.x kernel with SMP support.

Changelog:
Code:
* Updated Kernel to 2.6.28.6, without 4k stacks and with PCI_MSI, for improved Ndiswrapper support and to support the latest ATI drivers.
* Fixed Lxpanel not being visible at boot.
* Turned off auto update in Firefox.
* Added Chntpw and GUI. Used for resetting MS Windows passwords.
* Added a GUI to make partition backups of NTFS (Windows). This will backup a NTFS partition into one big compressed image file or into multiple smaller files. Tested with Windows 2000 and Vista. You'll find these last two under "Utility" in the menu.
* Recompile Openbox to fix a mistake.
* Several other small fixes and improvements.
You'll also find a package with the latest Catalyst 9.2 drivers for modern ATI cards (if you need it) and the DEVX file (only needed only if you compile stuff from source).

Default Reaper Installer and Suse 10.3

Hello,

I'm new to Linux and I would like to install reaper with this fine installer on my Amilo 1420 Notebook. JACK and the RT-kernel is working with Ardour etc.
I'm using an M-Audio Audiophile USB-Soundcard, which works ok in my configuration.
Now my problem:
I've downloaded the 0.82 script and started it on the standard-kernel. I selected to install reaper globally and then the latest reaper-version was loaded from the net. But nothing more happend. I can find the menue-shortcuts in KDE, but reaper refuses to start.
I thought there is a problem with the root-permissions, so I tried to install reaper locally on the RT-kernel, but also no success.

The console-output is as follows:

Creating Wine directory
Note: wineprefixcreate is deprecated and shouldn't be needed anymore.
WINEPREFIX creation and updates now happen automatically when needed.

winniewood, it sounds like you're trying to run the installation as another user than what you're logged in as.

Try running the installer without sudo or other tricks, and installing locally and see if that helps.
I must admit, the global install isn't as well tested as the local.

Welcome to Linux

Default Reaper Installer and Suse 10.3

Cybolic, thank you for your answer, but I start the script with doubleclick from the desktop as the user I'm logged in (no sudo or root).
I select the local installation, but the console output is the same as in my first message. I see that the directories under my home directory are generated (.local/reaper/wine/) but there is no reaper.exe under /drive_c/programs/.

Is there a need to have the propriatary ati display-drivers installed?

winniewood

Hello,

I recently installed Reaper on to my Ubuntu 8.10 under WINE - I installed it just as it is - and it runs, but it's extremely unstable (it crashes / or closes itself quite often - generally when loading a vst instrument / effect or making changes to a vst)

So, Will this installer make it more stable?

I guess the only real way to find out is give it a go...

No, Wine, Reaper and LinReaper have no connection to the display drivers.
It sounds like a general Wine problem you're experiencing. What distribution and Wine version are you using?

I probably won't. LinReaper wraps Reaper and Wine into a more Linux-like package, but doesn't does any magic to Wine.

Are you having trouble with all VSTs or are there any specific one that cause them?

I think that's what I need to do - is narrow down which vst's are causing the problem.

come to think of it - it seems pretty stable when there are no third party vsti's installed... so I guess they might be the problem.....

Default LinReaper under 64bit Linux

Hi!

Frist thanks Cybolic for this great utility that work very well in my opinion and gives people new to linux a chance to use the beloved Reaper.

Now I have some question no necesarily about LinReaper itself bout about some details regarding the use of Professional audio under 64bit linux:

1- Thanks I'm using a 64bit variant of Ubuntu 8.10 called "Linux Mint 6 x64", and downloaded and installed LinReaper and installs OK, but it doesn't load well, it seems that x64 distributions need an additional utility called "jackbridge" ,but I cannot find it ANYWHERE!!! (nor in the repositories or the CD-installers of 64studio x64, or any of the internet for that matter). How can I download/install/activate/(whatever) it?

2- I use the Delta family of PCI interfaces like Delta 44/66/1010LT (the last which I own), but it happens to me --not only in this distribution, but in all the other that I've tried--, that under the "Audio" tab, and "ALSA drivers", the "WAVE OUT Devices" and "WAVE IN Devices" are never listed (only lists the MIDI In/Out Devices) so I am forced to use the OSS driver (in which are listed fine as "ICE1712 multitrack") and this way there is no chance to use the wineasio driver and the Jack services to connect the facilities and all audio software available to linux.

Thanks for any comments and suggestions!

Default using 8.04 ubuntu studio x64, error initializing ASIO driver

Yo,

When I try to switch to ASIO and Wine ASIO it comes up with "Error initializing ASIO driver." I thought it was because jack wasn't started, but I tried again, and it didn't work. I'm using a PreSonus Firebox. One glaring problem is that when I look for wineasio.dll.so I can't find it, despite installing wineasio, so I can't do "regsvr32 wineasio.dll." Any ideas?
----------

Figured it out! Since I'm using x64, the wine folder's in "lib32" not "lib." so I got "regsvr32 wineasio" to work. Now I'll attempt the installation again. Sleep deprivation not good for simple tasks.

Thanks,
Mike

So is there no way to get this to work in x64? I'm trying to compile wineasio, but I get:

/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libjack.so when searching for -ljack
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libjack.a when searching for -ljack

/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/bin/../lib/libjack.so when searching for -ljack
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/bin/../lib/libjack.a when searching for -ljack
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libjack.so when searching for -ljack
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libjack.a when searching for -ljack
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ljack
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
winegcc: gcc failed
make: *** [wineasio.dll.so] Error 2

Do I still have to compile wineasio? Reaper still won't recognize wineasio without that, right, even with your installer?

@Cybolic:

Sorry for my late answer, but my job and my family kept me busy ;-)
I use OpenSuse 10.3 and my Wine version is 1.1.13. But I think there is
no problem with Wine, because I tried an install without your script
and reaper is running fine. So I will fiddle around with this installation
in the next time.

Thanks, winniewood

Has anybody tried this on Ubuntu Jaunty alpha releases? I've just started testing with their new realtime kernel. It seems like I'm getting disconnected from Jack after doing almost anything -i.e. opening an effects window while Brad Sucks is playing. It doesn't seem related to the kernel (I have tried w/o rt on the regular kernel) or wine (i've tried in the stable 1.01 and in 1.1.17 from wineHQ). All I can think is that wineasio is not playing nice with Ubuntu's jackd (0.116.1). Anyone else have any success. This is happening with 2.58 and 3.0alpha releases, both when installed with linreaper or on my own.

Follow-up: Installing jackdmp from 64 Studio's lenny backports and having qjackctl run that seems to have fixed this problem. Sill using libjack0 0.116.1. Not sure what was happening. SHould note that all of this is with pulseaudio unistalled. Unfortunately, now that projects are actually plying, I'm getting a ton of xruns, but this is testing kernel.

I have the same problem (Puppy Linux with JACK 0.116.1,Wine 1.1.17 and Wineasio 0.9.4).

With the JACK RT option enabled,Reaper (with WineASIO output) disconnects when you move, resize or scroll the window.

The funny thing is this happens only with WINE apps. Native Linux apps aren't that sensitive. They won't disconnect even if you run them at 1ms.

Non-RT mode doesn't have this problem with WINE apps, but the latency is way too high (5ms without Xruns is possible only with a monster PC)

Been looking forward to trying your Puppy Studio when it is ready for release. I was using NimbleX and Slax for recording on a USB stick with their normal kernels and I can only imagine Puppy with a lighter window manager will be even better.

For now I'm messing around with Ubuntu Jaunty now. I bought a budget DVB-T usb dongle that only has a kernel driver in 2.6.28 and up so I'm trying to balance recording and RT needs with having a 2.6.28 or 2.6.29 kernel. I saw Jaunty's rt kernel was available for testing and I jumped at it.

As I mentioned before, installing a couple jackdmp packages from 64 Studio helped. Don't recall the version, but not even close to current. I had tried their latest Jack2 packages, but that didn't help. The packages I used still depended on libjack0, and thus pulled in Jaunty's 0.116.1. But as long as I run jackdmp rather than jackd, things work fine. I've noticed that the xruns I'm getting are primarily when Reaper is opening projects with big VSTi's. Not so much during playback, so it is usable. I just don't like seeing qjackctl light up like a Christmas tree. This is an old Thinkpad Z60m using snd-hda-intel, which are notoriously fussy with jack anyway.

I have to set timeout to 5000 on jack 0.116.2 and jack2 for not getting disconnected from jack.

Set the timeout to 10000 and JACK refuses to start.

But using a value like 8000 makes it even more stable

Thanks fore the timeout hint. The rt-kernel and jackd both updated today on jaunty. I've gotten rid of the old jackdmp I was using and am using the normal jaunty jackd packages now. Things are working well, and xruns are down quite a bit too. This is all with reaper 3alpha5 and a timout of 5000 in Qjackctl.

At the moment I have a 2.6.29 vanilla kernel built with "low latency desktop" and 1000Hz timer options.

I've added the following to my /etc/rc.local and it seems to make a huge difference:

for x in $(pgrep timer); do
chrt -f -p 99 $x
done

The other hacks that I do is to run jackd with priority 85, and i start reaper with the following: chrt -f 80 env WINEPREFIX="/home/jack/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\REAPER\reaper.exe"

On my system I can now run run reaper (with all default options including use native events) at 128 samples buffer and high cpu load for hours with not a single xrun. 64 samples buffer seems to work equally good, but I run out of steam when trying to run at such low latency, Just need a faster cpu now

hmm, I'm having the same problem as winniewood. I'm running opensuse also - version 11.1 in my case - so I wonder if that's the problem. This looks particularly suspicious:

"application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly."

I wonder if one of the dialog windows doesn't appear because of that.

I'm running the installer in an xterm, and furthermore, I have DISPLAY set correctly:

/home/iksrazal> echo $DISPLAY
:0

Running reaper.sh I get:

/home/iksrazal> sh /home/iksrazal/.local/reaper/reaper.sh
wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\REAPER\Reaper.exe'

Running "locate Reaper.exe" after updatedb shows no file of that name on my system.

In winniewood's case, he might not of been running as the same user he logged in as. That's not the case here:

[linux-df3s(iksrazal)]
/home/iksrazal> whoami
iksrazal

I have wine installed, and furthermore, I was able to successfully install reaper easily via crossover as an "unsupported" app. The whole idea of linreaper encouraged me to try it out though, so thanks anyways!

Here is the console output of the install:

/home/iksrazal> sh LinReaper0.82.run

iksrazal, thanks for the report, could you post the output of env? LinReaper changes $HOME (to not conflict with regular Wine), so I'm guessing that's what gets messed up in OpenSUSE.

8.10 originally had an unusable rt kernel. I've recently added a usable one from a recent repo update, but I'd still say you should avoid 8.10 for audio production. Other problems included buggy shutdown procedures and network manager annoyances, but I will add that I still like the system. Just not for audio production.

Take a look at the new Ubuntu Studio 9.04. I haven't tried it yet, but the specs look like an improvement over the stock 8.10 system.

I'm running Ubuntu Studio 9.04 with a dual core Athlon 3000+, Audigy 2 and ATI x800 video card. I am using all the defualt drivers for my hardware, I don't know linux well enough to change things.

linreaper.82 seems to have installed everything fine. I went to the video settings for wine (using the Reaper Options icon in my menu) and turned off the window manager decorations in windows and selected only ALSA in the audio drivers page. In Jack I am running 128 frames/period, 48000 sample rate, 2 periods/buffer for an overall latency of 5.33ms which works fine with Rosegarden and Ardour.

Reaper opens just fine though the graphics are slow to refresh. After loading BradSucks I hit play and there is a quick flash of activity on the mixing meters then Reaper freezes, no playback. The program itself does not crash, I can still open menus, adjust volumes, press the stop button etc. it just won't play. I have tried changing my jack settings up to like 100ms latency but it doesn't change Reapers behavior. Any ideas?

By the way I don't seem to be able to run Jack control at the same time as Reaper. I have to make my setting changes then close Jack control before running Reaper. Is this normal?

Well I got it working. I spent the last hour just messing with jack settings in jack control. I found that checking the "no memory lock" option allows jack and reaper to work at the same time which I now assume it the way things should be. I can go down to a latency of 42ms and have Reaper work. The next lowest setting (21ms) and it won't work. Does this seem like a reasonable latency? I can live with it but I was hoping for better.

For some reason with the jackd in Jaunty, wineasio keeps getting disconnected from jack. If you go into the settings of Qjackctl and increase the timeout setting, it should fix this problem. Mine is at 8500 ms. If you go any higher than that, jack doesn't want to start.

Thanks Eric71 that made a big difference. At 8500ms on the timeout setting I can now run at 10ms latency. I did see a couple of xruns while listening to BradSucks so I'll probably move back up to 21ms but that is still fine for my use.

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and I gotta say Cybolic, the Reaper install you set up is awesome.

I downloaded it last night, install... boom. Less than 5 minutes TOTAL, and I have a working reaper system running in Linux!

Still need to work on my latency issues, for sounds clicking and glitching occassionally, but it just doesn't get much cleaner and easier than this.

I had Reaper running before, but with the required Pulseaudio package in Ubuntu, I couldn't get any sound. Now, "it just works".

Another user one step closer to ditching winblows all together. (If only I could get my zune hacked to update without the atrocious zune software!!!)

Thanks man!

GuitarJohnson, thanks for the kind words, I'm glad it worked for you!

My system is also Ubuntu Jaunty, so it should come as no surprise it worked flawlessly, but it's always nice to know

Will 0.82 work with Reaper3? I deleted my old Reaper and tried to install 3 but it gets stuck in some endless loop during the install. I'm not sure if I'm having a problem or if it just doesn't handle 3 yet.
