Default Surge Synth Team has updated Surge to Surge XT 1.0.

Lots of new features: check them out via the links below. Note: This is a new major version, so it does not overwrite any existing version of Surge on your machine.

Surge XT is available at: https://surge-synthesizer.github.io

You can read the changelog at: https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/changelog

Surge is free and open source software, released under GPL3 license.

I just downloaded it. Works fine on Ubuntu 21.04

Enjoy!

GUI seems smoother to me than the previous version.

Currently my favourite free synthesiser, and by a country mile. Continued development has kept this one fresh, despite being 16 years old. That said I'm still on Windows.
Good to see the Linux support though - one to try on a virtual machine (dip the metaphorical Linux toe) at some point.

One of my concerns with potentially moving to Linux at some stage isn't just the lack of mainstream support for plugins but also the lack of developers prioritising Linux support on multi platform plugins due to the need to support the main operating systems.

Anyway any teething problems like this?:

As far as the LV2 version having fewer outs, that's just a plugin format issue. I usually check the different formats of a plugin and see if there are any differences like that. The VST3 versions of both Surge and Surge-XT work fine on my machine.

In the past, I would often see the Linux version of a plugin being one or more minor versions behind. I don't see that *at all* anymore. With U-HE, Audio Damage, DiscoDSP, Tracktion Software, and many others, the Linux version #s of their plugins is the same as the Mac & Windows version #s. U-HE has a dedicated forum for Linux on KVR: https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=292 I'm sure those devs don't address Linux issues *first*, but they do address them.

Some smaller Open Source projects (can't remember which ones) don't have a Linux build. They'll have Mac & Windows binaries, and the source code. I'm on Ubuntu, so I don't build from source. I hear Manjaro makes it easy to to do that, but I have no experience there.

And of course, all of the Reaper JSFX work.

The Linux toolset is definitely getting larger as time goes by. By that I mean more and more devs are supporting Linux. It seems like around 3 or 4 years ago, several smaller devs started supporting Linux. That would include Auburn Sounds, Venomode, Audio Damage (I'm not sure how "small" they are), and Inertia Sound Systems started supporting Linux.

There is also more hardware support directly from the Linux Kernal:
21 April 2020: “Linux 5.8 To Properly Support The RME Babyface Pro High-End Audio Hardware” https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...E-Babyface-Pro

18 February 2020: “Linux 5.7 Picking Up Support For A High-End USB-C Audio Interface” (the Presonus 1810c) https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...us-1810c-USB-C

23 March 2019: “Linux To Add Support For The MOTU 8Pre Digital Audio Workstation Hardware” https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...x-Audio-Coming

Not trying to talk you into anything, just answering the question.

See what's available, and do what works for you!

Thanks for the comprehensive reply!
It sounds like things are moving in the right direction, albeit slowly.

For now a lot of my favourite plugins use iLok, but maybe they'll have to go if things continue to improve for Linux.

Thinking in terms of years; if Putin will allow us to have years to live that is - not particularly bothered about choice of operating systems in the irradiated landscape!

You can install the surge-xt-bin package from AUR.

yes, that's a debian build though and wont compile/install on ARCH. It's designed for Ubuntu I think.

Surge is in the official Manjaro repository. I just checked and mine says it's v1.9.

I'm also seeing surge-xt-bin (VST3 and LV2 plugins) in the AUR on the software app in Manjaro, but I haven't downloaded it so far.

yes i found surge 1.9 in the repository. But Surge XT wasn't there yesterday at least.

I'll have another look. On the website it ONLY has a .deb (ubuntu build)
I have/had the same issue with Sitala drum synth..only a .deb build.

the windows vst version seems to be running fine here , if a little heavy on the CPU at times but that's probably nothing to do with that

Surge XT was on the AUR in the software app on Manjaro. You have to enable AUR as a source in preferences|3rd Party, then do a refresh databases.

As I mentioned I have not grabbed it from the AUR coz I figger it will show up in the official repository, which is where I'd prefer to get it and have it keep itself updated.

I've just installed the AUR surge-xt-bin on manjaro and it works very well. looking at the AUR build file, it just downloads the .deb from github and extracts it to the system.

now to learn what is new on this version. Best synth got better?!

it installs lv2 and vst3 versions. it seems the LV2 version doesn't work well for me. it doesn't do note offs when changing playback cursor to a zone without item. so the notes keep playing in a zone that there is no items. The VST3 version works. So I recommend to use the VST3 version.

No, the AUR version was converted "from" the Debian build. Just try it:

You can install the Slate SSD5.5 free drumkit, you can even drag and drop midi grooves into reaper using Yabridge. unless you only prefer live drums.
