Default 6.59: new media explorer custom metadata feature

I think this feature is a bit hidden so here's some brief explanation.

You can add two kinds of user column in the media explorer. You access the functions to add/delete/edit user columns via the media explorer action list, or by right-clicking on the column headers.

One kind of user column is a read-only column, where you can specify an exact, specific metadata type to display. For example you can add a column for "ID3:TSRC", which will display the ISRC code for any files that have an ID3 tag embedded with the code. That's not a new feature.

The new feature is a custom user column, where you can name the column anything you want, and put any kind of data in it. For example you can add a column for "Quality", and add descriptions of how good your files are.

Custom data added this way will be cached locally on the computer, stored with media explorer databases, and can be written into the files for some (most?) file types. For example if the file type supports ID3 tags, a "Quality" field will be embedded as ID3:TXXX:Quality. Any other software that can read ID3 tags could then display the metadata.

Previously if you wanted to add arbitrary metadata that would be visible in the media explorer, your only option was to use the "custom tags" column, and there's only one of those. So if you wanted to add metadata for "instrument", and also metadata for "quality", and also metadata for "recording location", it all had to go under "custom tags" with no way to differentiate what the category of metadata was.

Now you can add as many columns as you want with whatever names you want. You can add separate columns for "instrument", "quality", "recording location", or anything else.

I'm not quite sure what I'm gonna use this for yet, but I bet it'll come in handy sooner rather than later. Thanks John!

I will definitely use custom columns that ! It was wanted since a long time !

I can mark some of my soundtrack libraries with a column for
  • Already used (list of project in which it has been used)
  • Style (orchestral, rock, etc)
  • Emotion (joyful, anger etc)
  • Instrument List (cello etc...)
And ideas will come on the way.

It seems to be single line only, but I guess it is enough for now.

Decided to bring this thread to the spot again because I have a question regarding Media Explorer and metadata as I'm getting interested on managing it via REAPER now:

Suppose I have some media files either being MP3 or FLAC, and I want to add information to these media files such as Album Artist, Copyright, Composer, ISRC, etc. How does one go about this?

Also, the standard on ID3 for MP3 for tracknumbers and part of set (disc number), normally they put the number and the total on the same frame, for example track is 1/12 and part of set is 1/2. On vorbis, the number is one field and the total is the other, so like the above example:
TRACKNUMBER=1
TRACKTOTAL=12
DISCNUMBER=1
DISCTOTAL=2

Is it possible to make these columns interchangeable among formats?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Peace,

Edu Camargo.

As it is now in v7.15 you can double-click any column to begin typing info.
You can also select multiple, then right-click and choose "Edit metadata tag:"

In the action list for Media Explorer you can set up shortcuts for actions such as Edit metadata tag: Album, reducing the number of clicks and mouse moving.

When finished with editing, right-click "write edited metadata to media"

Thanks a lot, I'll have a look on the action list for Media Explorer as it seems to be a more accessible approach and, as said above, will reduce the number of clicks and moves. I'm planning to make some tests with REAPER / Media Explorer in this regard for cataloging stuff. Never looked seriously for the metadata capabilities from Media Explorer but I think it'll be a great adventure, just as it is with REAPER in general.

Thanks again.

Peace,

Edu Camargo.

Two questions:

When you're going to edit metadata for files in media explorer, only columns set as custom appears on the submenu of metadata editing. The read-only columns which are based on a scheme does not appear, so you're left only with the standard fields. How this can be solved?

Also, is there a way of defining read-only user columns exactly like the standard ones, so for example you define the description as composer, and on the key field you set the schemes accordingly? This way REAPER understands that for MP3, it will add the composer field to TCOM and for opus / vorbis / FLAC composer is written to COMPOSER? I just found you have to add many user columns for each format.

If I am missing something, please let me know.

Thanks again.
