Cycling action is great stuff, thanks SWS team.

I made a few simple test cycling actions and it worked without problems.

However somehow I haven't come up with any great ideas where they make lots of sense.

So may I ask people to post examples how they use them ?

(Already some good examples on the previous page, but nothing I would urgently need personally so far).

I've started a new thread here to not derail the main SWS thread.

Have you tried to run it ?

It was introduced to get a short pause eg between two actions when you do a macro I think, but I don't remember what exactly the need for it was.

A very promising bar reaches completion... That's something.

Does that make it redundant to reaper's built in "wait" actions?

The cigar action I can't explain what it does, but I'm the one responsible for it's existance.

A nice anecdote that is. But a bit embarrassing for me as well . I had trouble with a custom action which afforded "SWS Save (recall) edit cursor position" from within the MIDI editor section of the action list. (It was something to automatically enter chords into the Piano Roll) Reaper refused to move on with a custom action that had one of these inside. I posted for help and my post ended with something about like "I tried this and that, but no cigar."

Jeffos jumped in to the rescue, promised the thread will end with a cigar and then came up with the "Let Reaper breathe" action. Whatever it does, it must be some slightly different magic than the "wait..." actions, because those didn't help, but the cigar action did the trick.
And we sure had a nice cigar:

The embarrassing part is that I very soon discovered a way to do what I seeked without the "Save (recall) edit cursor position" part, and the solution was easy and plain to see all the time. Doh! I don't even think I told Jeffos that, and I didn't find a reason yet to use "Let Reaper breathe" in any macro.

Yeah, that progress bar is very authoritative, isn't it?. I guess we can use it to give our macros that sense of "seriously hard work is done here".

(Really, I'm genuinely sorry, Jeffos ).

The thread ends with a sad touch, because we found on the way how big the obstacles for extension developers are when it comes to write extensions for the MIDI section of the action list. Still no change about that aspect, I'm sad to say .

Another action question:

What does "Toggle toolbars auto-refresh enable" do?

Also, what do "Toolbar top/right/bottom/left item selection toggle" do? They won't click...

On the subject the other toolbar actions: "Toolbar mute/solo/arm/automation modes" are awesome!!! I don't know how I missed them, but I know I'll be using them constantly.

Thanks!

is there or will there be a set of extensions for the midi editor?

btw since you mentioned housecleaning, i noticed a few areas where the wording is inconsistent making it sometimes difficult to track down an action for a macro. maybe it's limited to terminology for save/load since there's also store, recall, restore etc in use, i'm not sure. but you might consider picking a set of terms and using it everywhere if you're going through and cleaning up the lot of em.

keep up the good work!

Default SWS/AW Record (automatically group simultaneously recorded items)

Hi there!
Could someone help me with the following scenarios/actions:

Action A: SWS/AW Record (automatically group simultaneously recorded items)
Action B: SWS/AW Play/Stop (automatically group simultaneously recorded items)

Basic scenario:
4 Tracks with ascending inputs, record armed

1.) If I perform "Action A", and hit normal play/pause, the items are not grouped.

2.) If I perform "Action A", and then "Action B", the items are not grouped either.

3.) If I perform normal record, and then "Action B", the items are not grouped either.

4.) If I perform "Action A", and then normal record, the recording ends, the transport is still running, but still, the items are not grouped.

5.) If I perform "Action A", and then "Action A" AGAIN, the recording ends, the items ARE GROUPED (yay!), but of course the transport is still running.

Is this the way it's supposed to work? If not, can anyone tell me, how I get the transport to stop after recording, with the recorded items grouped?

Using Reaper 4 beta 4a x86 with SWS 2.0.0.20 on Windows 7 x64

2 and 3 should work, they don't work if the "newly recorded items that overlap existing items" preference is set to create takes though. I have it disabled in that scenario because reaper selects all the items when a split occurs so you get groups that you wouldn't actually want.

Ah thanks, you're right, it works when I don't create lanes. And now I also understand the problem/solution: If I record one pass, group the items, then all subsequent takes will belong to that group anyway, so for me there's almost no need for those 2 actions, since I always record in lanes.

But thanks for the explanation anyway, I love this forum and the tremendous amount of contributions to it and the software!

haha! I hope noone trusted a drunk guy pretending he'll do something "tomorrow" (or that a code re-entrance issue is "easy to fix" ).

About the previous SWS beta build #19 (details/changelog here)
heads-up for gofer:

this has been added in that build #19, this is one of the new "Toolbar auto-refresh" actions (SWS/S&M: Toolbar track envelopes in touch/latch/write mode toggle) !
Also, please, can someone let me know if "trigger FX preset actions" work on OSX? I have a serious doubt..

About build #20 and cycle actions
I decided not too spent too much time on changelogs from now.. So, many thanks to BenK-msx, Veto and gofer for documenting them (I just have to copy/paste that now ), you nailed them, exactly, including "advanced" usages with the S&M.ini file (also, thanks for confirming it works with the "even more advanced" ReaScript trick).

Other replies:
- Fixes in the *next* SWS beta build: cycle actions will be able to run SWS actions + MIDI Editor cycle actions will also run custom macro or scripts
- Nb of commands: you indeed have an unlimited number of commands for a cycle action *when editing it in the S&M.ini file* but the nb of commands is limited in the "create cycle action" dialog box. Before editing the S&M.ini file, make sure you have exited REAPER first!
- "Better dialog box": no time for that, sorry. I use an API helper (limited to 8 slots !#!wtfùé!?). Of course, a dedicated GUI for unlimited slots + friendlier features edit/remove/update/etc.. is doable but let see how it goes first.
- What is it? What is cycling? Use cases?
Globally, I can't explain it better than Adam did it here. Thanks Adam!
The typical use case is to have a single toolbar button which can do several things, in sequence (like.. dunno.. say, a button that shows take vol env, then pan env, then pitch env then mute env rather than 4 dedicated buttons)
A cool use case which has not been mentioned is to be able to define your own "toggle macros" (normal macros can't report toggle states, i.e. related toolbar buttons can't light up)
For the record, cycle actions even come from that old "toggle macro" idea/discussion.. I just removed the dust out of that code.

Coming goodies in the *next* SWS build (release later this week probably) :

Cycle actions can report a toggle state (if the action name starts with '#') or not.
Example:

note: interesting tabs in the anim, aren't they ?

Cycle actions can have different tooltips (if some steps '!' are followed by some text).
Example:

note: this anim was made with v4beta1. Unfortunately, some "toolbar tooltip riots" occured in the meantime -> what I show here doesn't work anymore with *icon* buttons.
It works with *text* buttons though (untick the new option "use as tooltip" when creating the button). That v4beta2's new option doesn't exist for *icon* buttons, alas.

fingers and I did some (about CC lanes for ex) but, due to an API limitation, they belong to the "Main" section of the action list. PITA.

Hi Tim,

Any possibilities of adding autocolor for region/ markers?

Example :

region 1 is named "mistake" = automatically changes to red

region 2 is named "verse" = automatically changes to green

region 3 is named "chorus" = automatically changes to blue

I think this will be very useful. Hope you agree and hope it's not too difficult for someone as awesome as you.

Hi, can cycling help me do this?

i have a macro that changes the midi default tools in many areas, so i have a "Erase" macro that will change note click, piano roll click drag, CC click & CC lane click & drag all to an erase function,

same for marquee, draw, & a combined paint & line tool,

these macro tools are great but the buttons give me no feedback (toggle display) currently i have put the 4 paino roll actions also on my toolbar just for reference of what mode i'm in

is there any way i can make the macro buttons toggle/or untoggle each other?

here is an example of my macros

thanks for your time!!

@steve: yes, see earlier posts (done through S&M.ini file edition, atm)
@subz: in short, my answer should been "yes" but, as we're talking about the ME, it's "no, sorry".
Cycle actions are created in the "Main" section of the action list while ME toolbars are made from actions of "ME event list" and "ME" sections. Work arounds could be: using a floating toolbar rather than the ME one -or- using gofer's reascript trick (to call cycle actions) to create that ME toolbar. Both clunky workarounds.. Once again, please vote here: http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=2704

Veto, are you sure the *.py file you saved does not contain the color tags I placed in the code for clarity reasons? I'll go into that post again and make that more obvious.

This is the same example without color tags, it works fine here:

Code:
VIEW_CYCLE_NOTES_COLOR =  RPR_NamedCommandLookup('_S&M_ME_PIANO_CYCLACTION1')

RPR_Main_OnCommand(VIEW_CYCLE_NOTES_COLOR, 0)

Another thing one can easily topple over about is missing the empty line at the end of the code. The last thing in your Python code needs to be a line break (enter key in a text editor).

I guess I will create a WIKI page about this trick, once I find the nerves for it.

Veto, try updating to Python 3.2 if you have an earlier version.

EDIT: or, perhaps try earlier Python 3.1.3.
EDIT2: see this thread http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=78791

might as well try asking for "auto-color items" too!

But I can think of other SWS requests I would rather have first

- Optional dynamic action renaming (e.g. different tooltips for each step)
sounds interesting, how's it work (or am I looking to deep into it?)

- Optional toggle state (buttons can light up or not)
How do you do this too?

I can't get the tooltips to appear either

Default Question about snapshots and automation..

I know that plug in envelopes are supported in snapshots which is amazing but was wondering if volume, pan and all the other standard envelopes would be an option at some point?

This could give us full "automation takes"

I think this was asked before but couldn't find the answer again.

Thanks

ok, the next guy asking for something which I have detailed a few posts before in a 3-pages-long-post-with-147-LICEcaps will have his issues totally ignored in the SWS tracker.
Even if he's the top #1 donnater.
Nothing, 0, nada.

note: this anim was made with v4beta1. Unfortunately, some "toolbar tooltip riots" occured in the meantime -> what I show here doesn't work anymore with *icon* buttons.
It works with *text* buttons though (untick the new option "use as tooltip" when creating the button). That v4beta2's new option doesn't exist for *icon* buttons, alas.

hey Mike, check THIS (and this and may be this thread) out!

fingers and I did some (about CC lanes for ex) but, due to an API limitation, they belong to the "Main" section of the action list. PITA.

Guys, anyway you could add a way to toggle hide all the item buttons all at once?

Or perhaps the individual buttons and we can then make our own custom actions.

Just a thought ...

+Xenakios/SWS: Implode items to takes and pan symmetrically
+Xenakios/SWS: Pan takes of item symmetrically
+Xenakios/SWS: Set item playrate based on item pitch (and reset pitch)
+Xenakios/SWS: Set item pitch based on item playrate
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to next cue
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to next cue (preserve item length)
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to previous cue
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to previous cue (preserve item length)
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to first cue
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to random cue
+Xenakios/SWS: Switch item contents to random cue (preserve item length)

Ah crap, #22 breaks the edit cursor, I'm removing the download until it can be fixed (a couple hours). Reinstall #21 in the meantime!

Default As you know by now tim (and Jeffos)... THANKS A MILLION YOU GENII/GENIUSES!!!

This is insane stuff and as mentioned in the other thread this means we now can have per track (but more importantly) per project presets. It makes auditioning and coming back to fx per track so easy!

Anyone who understands it's power should donate (as I will be doing) a little something at least because it really is a very cool feature!

Been testing and so far the snapshots has been working extremely well!

Ok, now on to the test results so far..

Firstly, although excellent something (either drag ruler or edit cursor to zoom) has caused a big bug in my reaper (32bit alpha 6 with win7 64bit).

I can no longer locate my edit cursor using either the ruler or the arrange page, it seems to have locked me out now nothing I change brings it back to normal.

also here's a list of what I found so far.

-snapshot) the new types of panners, not sure if it's possible but they don't recall the type yet
-snapshots) the master out/send doesn't recall yet either (but not a big deal)

-drag zoom) when used in bottom half of ruler it's very smooth but disables any standard (no modifier) dragging to create loop points
-drag zoom) when used in the top half of the ruler it tends to veer off to the left of the arrange as you zoom in.
-drag zoom) caused me to not be able to move the edit cursor using the ruler (or it may have been the "move edit cursor on zoom" function)
