Default Media Explorer Enhancements: Fully Featured SFX Database Tool

Summary -

Many sound designers use either Sound Miner or Basehead as a supplementary tool alongside Reaper, paying an extra 200-800 dollars to have some additional features that would be great to see come to the media explorer. I think this would add a great deal of value for users.

Here is a list I came up with, feel free to add on to this if you think of something else that's missing, or shoot down ideas that don't make sense.

Reverse playback
Ability to audition samples in the media explorer with reverse playback

Play random sample in search results
Select random search result to playback

Open file/selection in external editor
Action to open sample in external editor
(saved files create new instance in media path, non destructive)

Shortcut: show in explorer/finder; Show location in media explorer
Assignable shortcut for this action; Additional action to show folder
structure in media explorer.

Add file to database (I use a database called "Taglist")
Action to specify a database to add to from your current search. (i.e. taglist)

Add playback rate slider; increase pitch shift knob range
Add slider that behaves like the playback rate control, independent of the
project playback rate. Ability to import items with this rate applied.
Increase range of pitch shoft knob beyond +/-12 semitones.

Metadata searching, tagging, columns
Metadata columns or description field, ability to edit/batch edit metadata.

Print FX on import / play through specific track (Addition to Play through selected track).
Ability to play through a specified track, rather than selected track. Ability to print fx to items on import. (i.e. VST Rack)

Import with tail
Complements previous feature - user selected tail time (ms) imported with item.

Additional Search Features
Favorite Searches, Recent Searches, Search remains in field and gets applied
when switching databases.

Mark Played Files
Files that have been played already get a text color change (slightly greyed
out). Ability to reset this tag.

Database Group Searching
Ability to select and search through multiple databases at once. Allows for better
organization of assets.

Database Tree View
Additional tree view as a visual aid for searching through folder structure.

Ability to print fx to item on import, basically saves a step printing FX to
items after importing them. Additional ability to play through a track acting
as a vst rack.

Amazing !! +1 for this...

I'm not sure if ever growing reposted lists help.

From a user perspective I don't want to give thums up to all. Reason being that I want to nudge my favourite requests up.

From a developers standpoint the list cover a quite unrelated feature set. Eg reverse playback is quite a different beast compared to tag managment.

Anyway, I agree that the media explorer could be improved in many ways.

I would use pretty much all of these, especially metadata editing

The biggest issue for me is actual browsing like in file explorer. It's too slow and clunky when you have a huge library with many sub folders. Many other DAWs e.g. Ableton, Bitwig use tree-like folder browsing, which is much more efficient.

And this databases thing obviously was designed without typical electronic production samples library in mind. If I make some 'vendor-name' folder as database it wold be HUGE pile of unsorted samples. If I create databases from individual sample packs, I'll end with too many databases, and they still be big mess inside.
And it's impossible to create categorized databases (loops, one-shots, basslines etc) because there's no standard on how sample packs are structured. Some have their own structure, some piles everything in BPM-labled folders, some use genres, etc. And shortcuts are not very helpful too - ether you have some high level shortcuts which still requires do many click when going deeper, or again you have tons of shortcuts.

Because of that I minimized my library for about 20GB (excluding soundware for samplers) of essentials, but it's still about 3000 folders to browse through!
So, my biggest FR request for media browser is ADD TREE VIEW on left pane, please! Ideally with ability to add databases as subfolders.

Agreed, we can use databases to group samples, but we cant search through multiple databases at once, so it's not very useful for organization. As someone who shares my sample path with other people, I would like to have the ability to search a user defined parent database/group, or an individual nested database/group. (Or, alternatively, simply click on several databases/groups at once and search that way, although that is a bit more limited) For those organizing their own file structure, a tree view might be preferred.

+1! We still need these nice FRs! Tree in database with ability of search in ticked folders only and otherwise - unticking unwanted folders to exclude from search (the search string should not disappear by those actions). It would be most important to me! Highlighted text of already played files which is different from cursor of playing file is much welcomed also. It's hard to recognize which file the little dot belongs to.

FWIW a few of these features already exist in REAPER's media explorer:

Preview random file in current folder/database
Playback rate knob
Add custom metadata columns
Mark played files
Edit metadata
