REAPER CONTEST - MARCH 2018 (FEEDBACK)
__________________________________________________
We can't start 2018 without a rock song to work on. This song, chosen by user cool, is called Facade, by the band Young Griffo and I think it's a good session to improve your mixing skills.
Make sure to blast your speakers while working on this one to annoy your neighbours
As always you can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.
Happy mixing!
Dave

Yikes! chop! chop! If only this were a fulltime job, I could get away with just spending every day all day in Reaper-Land.....

I think I won't do any editing unless it's really unusable. I just want to mix and have no time spending a whole day cleaning everything up

Man, I am gaining mad respect for engineers that work in a studio and do this mixing full time... The stuff they must hear, phewww!
Six more days, tic toc tic toc.. This is a great way to learn Reaper, that's for sure.

Oh man, I thought I was the only one who was raising my eyebrows while trying to do something with the kick. I had no freekin' idea how many chop-chops it took to isolate the kick. (I won't even mention the seeming attachment of the players right hand and foot... )
I actually do like the song which is a good thing I suppose. Sounds familiar in style a little bit.
However, all that noise aside (inside, left side, right side, outside), I'm still determined to get a mix out of this. It'll only make me better, eh?

Is anyone trying to fix the hi-hat timing at all on the choruses? I feel pretty comfortable with my mix except for that. I'm not bothered by the kick timing so much.

Timing issues aside, I've learned a lot from this as I didn't realize just how much of an improvement could be made using compression alone.

Guitar tracks
Help me out here... do the Gtr1 a, b, c, and d tracks contain four recordings of the same performance? With a rock guitar song like this, I would expect two separate performances and I would pan them L and R. But they really sound like four recordings of the same performance. I noticed, though, that c and d have a delay effect while a and b do not. So I thought maybe a and b are one performance and c and d are another. But even panning a and b to one side and c and d to the other side, it just does not sound like two separate performances. Plus why would they label them like that (all "Gtr1" with letters and the mics noted) if it's two performances? Gtr2 comes in later. So no matter how I pan the four Gtr1 tracks, it sounds mono, or nearly mono... and just weird overall. What do others think and how are you approaching the guitars? I'm brand new to the Contest so I'm a little unsure of the norms here on the forum but I assume that it's cool to try to get others' takes on dilemmas like this and that we help each other out? Thanks for any thoughts that you have on this.

My take for what it's worth is that it could be a three piece band. To save time perhaps the Guitar player used a splitter box and had a couple of amps and four mics. They recorded each mic with it's own track/effects, so they would have options to mix later. Same apparently for the bass guitar too.
As far as how to mix it or what "we" do with these tracks is really up to our personal preferences, to use the palette in some creative way that does justice to the song as the band intended?
There is nothing stopping you from using EQ's or perhaps some type of effect from within reaper to give more texture to the Guitar track. I personally am trying to keep the rule "Less is More" in my creative endeavors, as I too am new to this Mix Contest Format.
I say don't get hung up too much on the 'literal' but make it sound how you like to listen to it, and also that the "mix works" (translates) on a few varieties of listening examples. From earbuds, to home stereo, Headphones, NF Monitors, Car speakers, or even just the speakers on your cell.
When it's got me feelin like it's the best I can to with what I know today, then I'll submit it. Feedback will be given, and out of that I hope to learn what to incorporate into my next attempts. Each of my mixes will improve. And Man! This is fun having all this music to mix.
This will be the first mix I turn in. Last month ( my 1st attempt) I started a little late, didn't quite finish, and still had to learn the LUFS portion. Now I know how, and so I have progressed a bit. There is more to mix than I find humanly possible. So I will always have Puhhhlenty of practice material.
I imagine it will be similar for you? A year from now you'll look back and go hmmmmm.... and be amazed how far you've come.
So take a risk, or not, be creative, or conservative. Above all Rock that song, and see what happens.
At the end of last months contest the winner ( COOL ) provided his .rpp session file. Then I was able to open it up and see how he approached the mix.. I totally learned from it, and appreciated his sharing. I'm hoping that this continues in future contests.

This would be my guess as well. It could have been done with Amp sims but, either way, it seems like only one performance.

Yeah. One performance for sure. Same guitarist overdubbed the solo in another take with same setup (I'd bet). I listened to them and deleted the tracks I wasn't going to use for easier on-screen management.

I think they sound pretty good in the "cleaner" parts but in the heavily distorted parts? Ouch! Holy Whistling Fizz Factor! It hurts my ears!
Is the guitar sound that the kids are into today?

I always download the months mixes - I take notes in the track notes.
Of course it bit me last month as I forgot to save .
I had just reset my reaper settings and forgot to turn on autosave.
Not sure about this one...
