Default Bigger toolbar icons?

Hello,
I am making some custom toolbars, but I find the default size of the buttons to be too small (when you don't have an icon for it, it can't display much text).
Is there any way to be able to have bigger toolbar icons ?

Oh, I wasn't aware of this option : thank you, PhelixK !

I also noticed that I can make bigger toolbar icons, and it will be displayed at the native size (which can be a workaround, but it dosn't work with existing icons buttons).

ok good and you're welcome. I haven't tried to create custom sized icons, I would like to explore this further.

In concern of transparent toolbar overlays (png), I have encountered some inconsistencies in terms of what bit-depth is required for the different resolutions in order to display best way possible. I'm still experimenting by using png-8 vs png-24, optimized vs none.

I've seen a cool thing in a Kenny Gioia video : the size of floating toolbars buttons can auto-adapt themselves with the size of the whole toolbar. Go to Preferences -> Appearance and untick "Don't scale toolbar buttons above 1:1".

Thank you for the tip, Benf.
However, i unticked "Don't scale toolbar buttons above 1:1", and it didn't change anything in my floating toolbar...

Did you try to enlarge the floating toolbar ?
Here is Kenny's video :https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#LzesiU5_Blk
Go to 7:28.

I have a solution! This drove me crazy. It is a little involved but I can do it pretty quickly now. I have rows of custom text icons at the top of my sessions so I can quickly instantiate my plugin of choice on an item or the fx rack. Screenshot is attached.

What you do...

Go to your Color Themes folder. Locate your theme of choice. Mine is the default 5 nitpicky edition, I think. If it is a single file ending in the suffix ".reaperthemezip", then you need to put a "." before the zip to change the suffix and then unzip that sucker. It will split the theme into a resource folder and a ".reapertheme" file.

Go in to the resource folder and search for "toolbar_blank.png". Once you find this guy, open it in photoshop or another image editor and make its size 200%. I find that this also blows up these pink guide lines on the corners. Maybe they won't bother you, but I edit them out. Save the png.

Then, go back to the folder which contains the resource folder and the ".reaperthemezip" file that you just worked with. Zip those two files together and name it something like "Mytheme.reaperthemezip".

Then, it is good to go. Now you will be able to have large text icons with crisp text. I had to edit eht etext via the theme tweak action, but that's not hard either. Just search toolbar text to change the color of the text. And I think the first font is the one you want to adjust.

Wow, typed out, this sounds really difficult, but its not as hard as it seems. I can do it pretty quickly now in just a few minutes for a new theme. In fact, maybe you should just tell me which theme you want to use and I can do it for you. ha. Perhaps I should make a video about this because its a real annoyance in Reaper and one they need to address. My bigger icon text toolbars are essential to me.

Thank you, interesting hack.

I think I would rather prefer to batch-resize some toolbar icons to 48pix height, because this way it would allow me to use any theme (or assure forward compatibility with themes updates).

However, I wish there had a native, elegant way to have custom toolbar icons size

Agreed. This SHOULD be easier. I was just so happy to figure out a way to at least make bigger text icons readable.

It's coming along nicely

I have decided to make custom toolbar icons with a 48pixels width, and I enjoy it. I might post the icons if anyone is interested.

Thank you all for your help !

BBusby, thank you for hack tip.
I made double-wide icon and it works perfectly for text icons with longer texts.

Thanks again for sharing that hack.

FYI In the default 6 theme, all the included icons are provided at 30x30 (normal) but also 45x45 and 60x60. You won't see them if your screen is at 100% because they are there to automatically be used for hires screens, but you can copy the files out if you want bigger icons for standard sizes, just be aware that the file names are the same as their 100% versions, so be wary of overwriting.

Look in (reaper resource path)/Data/toolbar_icons/150 ...and 200.
