When zooming into video, Reaper becomes slow...
I don't know, if this is qualifies as a bug or is more like a nitpick...
When I edit video in Reaper, it goes very well, but when I zoom in into my project Reaper becomes very slow at some zoom-factor. I suppose, it's updating the peaks to be more detailed in closer zoom-states, but it makes working with video really sloooow.
This is especially annoying, when I try to synchronize video to an already existing audio, as this needs fine-dragging of items very much, with a lot of zooming in->dragging->zooming out, etc.
Is there a way to improve on that?

Yes, I know. And I think Reaper should create a lowres preview feature to avoid such things. In other video programs you only run once thru the range and it loads (renders) the changes into the preview for better performance.
But if I take a look at my daughters smart phone: She uses a small video and photo app called cameringo+. I couldn't believe how this little thing was able to warp, color, noise and kaleidoscope everything in real time directly from the smart phone camera input. Preview and video saving at the same time! How is this possible?

Try turning off Hi-res peaks in Media Item Properties (F2) --> Properties.

this is why I say to set 'ignore audio' for video items in my tutorials

One needs to be able to see the audio peaks for the alignment and likely zooming in for that same reason - I sync from 3-7 cameras that way - but ignoring audio hides the waveform - I don't need the audio audible (I only need the peaks) so the best method is an action I have to paste a volume JS on the item FX @-120dB so there is no sound but we keep the visual peaks but that doesn't really affect the zoom issue.
Moving on, I only see this zoom problem with 4k video FWIW. Smaller res stuff doesn't slow down.

what a weird workaround lol you could just alt-click the routing button on the track.
in videos from any of my cameras the peaks are always a bit off of visual so I would only ever sync first frame of a handclap to transient in dedicated audio. It's way off if you match transients.

I might try that but what I have now, it's a single button, I select the items and push it.

No problem here for whatever reason (D7500 and GoPro), I can always get them all aligned in Reaper and Davinci. If a peak was off (don't remember seeing it happen), it's irrelevant since the video has movement I can reference.
I don't use the handclap anymore because I'll always forget somewhere (one guy playing/singing/lighting/recording audio and video on lots of cams means I might forget), which made me really good at not needing the handclap method.

Reaper slows to an utter crawl as soon as I try to add any video.

@karbomusic
It happens on my computer with any video of any resolution. It works quite (and astonishingly) smoothly, as long as I don't zoom in too much.
@EpicSounds
Setting ignore audio doesn't help, as I synchronize audio and video by ear. If they match properly, its synched, if not, I have to readjust.
This is especially important with video, that runs too fast/slow leading to synchronisation-issues over a period of time, where I need to adjust the playrate to keep audio and video consistent over time.
So ignoring audio isn't an option for me, until it's synched completely. From then on, I can safely ignore audio, which improves the editing a lot.

Do you know the format/spec of the video?

You shouldn't have to do that. If you check the item properties of the video it should tell you the framerate and you should just need to match the framerate in project settings.

If the video is long enough the audio will eventually get out of sync regardless. I never have to deal with it be because my vids never run past 4-6 min.

Not the audio that is literally in the video but audio recorded alongside the video - that's just what I assumed they were doing but could be wrong.
