Options - Preferences - Audio - 'Automatically mute any track' - 'no automatic muting'.

To disable this might be not a good idea. It could be a real danger to your ears and gear. Before disabling completely I'd increase the threshold.

Agree.

Why do you want to turn it off?

Thanks for the help. I was just trying out some weird and wacky sounds and wanted some clipping (it's only my laptop soundcard)

The automute behavior that's been bugging me seems to be the opposite of what would protect my ears and gear.

Usually, when a track gets automuted for me, I'm listening back to it solo'd, and the automuting of the single track I'm listening to has the effect of turning on all the other tracks, which can be much much louder than a peak from a single track (e.g with many different interviews or field recordings on their own tracks in a session).

How can I fix that side of it?

and how does one go back to 'normal' after track is automuted?

ok found a work-around, new duplicated track makes it able to 'unmute'.

Click on the mute button. Or, if the setting "Reset on playback start" is enabled, stop/pause and resume playback.

(8 years later, still valid thread

... and I just learned that if clicking the "mute" -button seems not to affect anything, that is because problem (which trickered the automute) still persists.

I lowered the mixer volume to -infinite, then pressed "mute" and channel was unmuted.
But I also noticed that one of the plugins in my chain had entered the gates of Dante's Hell and channel meter claimed the input level was +99dB ...

Oh. so THATS WHY it automuted!

Great feature, but it could perhaps inform somehow, what is going on, why channel gets automuted.
