Default How to find REAPER.ini

REAPER.ini is the main configuration file in Reaper, all your preferences settings, your default project settings and many other things are saved in there.

It's good advice to make a backup of it before you make any changes or experiments and sometimes troubleshooting might need you to find and delete or edit it. Where you can find it depends on your OS of course:

(Note: Since v3.45 you can simply go Options->"Show REAPER resource path in Explorer/Finder" to find out its location.)

[XP] *

On XP, it's usually in

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\REAPER

If you can't find that, you probably have to enable display of "hidden folders" in Explorer:

1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders"

[Vista + Windows 7/8.x] *

Location is a bit different here:

C:\USERS\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Reaper

If you can't find it, go to the Control Panel, select the 'Appearance and Personalization' section, from there, Folder Options --> Show hidden files and folders.

[OSX]

It sits in

<username>/Library/Application Support/REAPER

If you can't find that folder in Spotlight, you probably have to search in 'System Folders' in order to find it or go to Finder, hit Command+G and enter '~/Library/Application Support/REAPER' in the dialog box popping up. That should take you directly to that folder.

OSX Lion and higher:

The "official" way is to open the Finder, open the Go menu, then hold down the Option key. Alternatively, open Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type "chflags nohidden ~/Library". This Lion behavior will cause all sorts of inconvenience for advanced REAPER users who are familiar with the REAPER inifiles.

* [x64]
In Windows x64 versions, the folder name ends with '...\REAPERx64'

Default

Advanced Information

The above information describes where to find Reaper user preference and configuration data by default.

However, if you specifically create a REAPER.ini file in the same directory as the reaper application, Reaper will look for all user preference and configuration data in the application directory, ignoring the default directory.

This advanced behavior is handy if you want to create separate preference profiles, or temporarily override your customized preferences.
