No midi sound on track.

Hello, My name is Rich and I am new to Reaper. I am using the Arturia Analog 3 Synth with a midi controller. Last night I added a new track for flute. I had signal but no sound. The Track is set up identically like the other tracks.
Monitor is on
Input selected is midi controller.
record midi is selected.
I can record midi data but no sound.
If I switch to record midi output I can here the instrument but there is no sound on playback even though the midi data is recorded.
Not sure what record midi output is used for.

A second issue is sometimes midi notes play louder or softer than I want. I adjust velocity if one or two notes individually. If it is an entire section I select that section, raise the velocity to 127 then back down to where I may want it but I sometimes do not here a change even if it is a drastic change in volume. This is intermittent so it would be hard to reproduce. The majority of the time it is fine.
I have other questions but I am trying to figure things out on my own so as not to inundate the forum with request for help.

I am running Windows 10 Pro (X64), 16 gig of Ram, 1 TB drive
