Default Faster Reaper udates in the Repositories (Manjaro)

Is there any way to find Reaper in the repositories more quickly? Sometimes it's a week or so before the update makes it there.

Manual install is too annoying, so I can wait, but just wondering...

Are you talking about the Arch community repo? If so, I'm finding it very prompt. Yes, there's the occasional wait but the David could have been on holiday or something. I believe there are now two maintainers so it should speed things up a bit. Indeed, George Rawlinson packaged v6.66.

In pamac under repositories I've got core, community, extra, multilib and sublime-text but updating that and sudo pacman -Syu both still leave me with 6.65 as the latest.

Ah, are you on Manjaro? There's about a 2-week delay between packages arriving on Arch repos, moving through Manjaro unstable/testing before finally arriving on the stable branch. Unless you are actually on Arch and using a mirror that doesn't get updated regularly

Ah, yea I guess I should've mentioned it. So can I add that repo directly to pacman somehow?

Hmm, possible? Sure. Should you? Sounds like a lot of potential trouble. Maybe consider EndeavourOS if you want something approaching a vanilla Arch experience?

I download the Reaper file directly from Reaper.fm.
I'd been manually creating a portable install for many years in Wnidows and just continued to do that in Linux.
I'm using Manjaro XFCE.

Steps:
- download the appropriate Reaper installer for your system
- unpack the file and run the installer script.

For manual portable install:
- unpack the installer.
- Find the folder with all the Reaper Effects in it and rename it 'Effects'.
- find the folder with the ColorThemes, Scripts and other folders in it and move them into the main Reaper folder
- Create a Reaper.ini file in the main Reaper folder
- Copy your license file into the main Reaper folder
- Put the main reaper folder in sub-folder in your Home directory (I use a folder called 'opt' in my Home directory).
You can also try putting Reaper directly in Home directory

This method requires running Reaper from the command line to open it.
If you want to open it using the Menu, run the Installer script and choose the option for integrating into the desktop.

This works well for me, but YMMV.

NOTE:
I have a 'test' drive I clone my current setup to and use that to try out new things on.
This has been very helpful in testing and learning new things over the years without trashing my working setup.
The 'test' drives also doubles as a quick back to the working drive when not being used for testing.
I recommend this method even if confident of your abilities.

You can download the Arch package here (click Download From Mirror on the right side): https://archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/reaper/

Use sudo pacman -U to install the file.

Yes, great idea, this should work fine but in general attempting to do this for other standard Arch packages or AUR on Manjaro can have unintended consequences with libraries that are currently the two weeks behind compared to Arch. It's one of the main reasons I left Manjaro to be honest but I'm probably an outlier in this regard.

This can definitely cause issues with dependencies that haven't been updated yet in Manjaro, but in REAPER's case, that should rarely happen.

But yeah, messing with packages like that is usually a bad idea.

This would be for the default repositories, I believe. Manjaro pulls from the Arch repos and hangs on to them like you mentioned. However, Manjaro uses the exact same AUR as Arch. Since the AUR is the same, it is indeed the packagers that you are waiting on for Reaper.

REAPER is no longer AUR but in the Arch community repo...

That was one of the reasons I didn't stay with Manjaro either. However, EndeavourOS, which I used for many months until I switched to Fedora, worked great with the AUR, since EndeavourOS pulls from the exact same repos as Arch. However, I didn't like the constant maintenance required by the Arch family. It was a great OS otherwise.

Whoops! I haven't kept up on it. I personally use the install script since there is no Fedora repo for it. I remember that they "did" have it in the AUR.....

Yeah, I reached out to the AUR maintainer about helping maintain it (given it was taking an age to appear after an official REAPER release) and within days it was picked by David Runge and the AUR version deleted. Total coincidence, I hope

Maybe, maybe not Either way, if it's being handled as an Arch binary and is being kept up to date, it's all good. I remember a few months back when WINE went for several weeks without getting updated. That was a pain.

But you know, you can download the latest version from the reaper website and run the install script? I never had issues with that (running manjaro too).

It's just unpacking the installer, right click -> run in terminal and follow the instructions.

Sure, I know. After ten years of running installers though, I'm pretty sick of it.

Check out FeedTheCat's script Update Utility (I think that is the name). Two clicks and an admin password later, REAPER is up-to-date. Stable or Dev release.

Wow I like the looks of that even better! Reaper didn't like it so much and hanged...says "extracting" but never asks for password and just stops responding.

I remember having this problem once but it was solved with an update of the script. Maybe it would help contacting FeedTheCat.

What distro and DE are you using?

I am having no troubles on ZorinOS (Ubuntu 20.04 under Gnome).

I'm on Manjaro KDE. I updated ReaPack first, so assume the script is current.
