Default Distorted signal/white noise

Hello, I've been trying to sort out performance issues on my new laptop and seem to have got rid of some of them but there is one I am stuck with still.

When I record with a microphone or when nothing is plugged in at all the recording has a lot of noise on it, and the waveform is a chunky rectangle line with spikes coming off.

For some reason when I plug in a guitar the recording is fine but with a mic or with nothing plugged in the problem arises.

Thanks for reading.

What mic and audio interface are you using?
It sounds to me like the input can only take high impedance sources (like guitar). That doesn't explain having noise with nothing plugged in however.
