Default Music & Video: La Recette de La Semaine by Enny Harlan

Hi everyone !

Enny Harlan, a good friend of mine, beat maker and multi-instrumentalist, just launched its YouTube channel,
and has for project to release one video clip per week !
The concept is to mix music styles and instruments (aka ingredients) to make a good recipe :P ("The Recipe of the Week"). Always with humor !

All the music composition, editing and mixing is made on REAPER,
He do all this by himself, including video editing,
And since the second video, I personnaly do the video shooting :P

Only three videos for now but the third one (just released) is already a step higher in our production quality !

This week, he mixed Kora tradititionnal music instrument and orchestral composition. Here is the result:

EDIT: Other videos in posts below. Subscribe to this thread to be notified for the following ones :P

like this one !!

or this one :

And it keeps getting better :P

Thanks for your support !

(note: he is also the music composer and one of main actor of my Alien 2347 audio fiction project, made on REAPER, of course )

Many thanks for your comments
And very glad you like it under all these considerations ! We are still experimenting on the video side, I think we have some room for improvements there. Very stimulating !

See you next week for the future video then :P

You say you can improve on the video, but this one is just great. Very engaging - maybe the only video I've ever watched that I wish had been longer.

This guy Enny is not just talented, but he looks like he's having a great time too.

I know it's some type of traditional instrument, but near the end it looks like he's playing a pumpkin. What is that thing?

@Stinger
Thx for the feedback ! I'm pretty sure Enny will love it :P

Oh yes, he do has great time (and so do I, cause it is funny to film) ! It is the main motivation behind this project, just having fun with lots of instruments :P

Quote:

Almost ! The instrument is called a Kora, and it is a traditional sub saharian african instrument, and it is made from a fruit ! (I think called Calabash in english)
It's quite tricky to play cause the notes are opposed from (C E G etc on a side for left hand, D, F, A for the other..), but it has this kind of harp like sound which is pretty nice. Also, this one has built-in microphone so it has a great sound in recordings.

X-Raym

Totally enjoyable experience.

Extremely nice arrangement and I like the use of the exotic instruments.

Your video was nicely put together, I can see all the hard work that you have done.
You could use a bit of image stabilisation on a couple of shots but the edit and camerawork were very good.

Lovely all around production for both music and visuals.

Regards,

SR

Indeed he is :P Thx for your support !

@Sambo Rouge
Thanks for this sincere and open review
Be sure Enny will love it as well !

For the stabilization in the Kora video, we had a Ronin, but honestly, it is not my thing, I feel very limited in the movement I can perform, and it is surprisingly heavy.

I will have another gimble in the next video. (not the one below, but the next one).

@All
Enny just released a new video !

This time, the kazoo is the main idea... A very funny little instrument, usually used in cartoon and children music :P

No forest this, time, we visited a studio which just open in my own small town. A way to support local activities :P

Less epic, but I hope you will like it as well !

Thanks so much for your empowering comment ! I don't know when the next video will come out but we will do our best to make it at least as good as the previous ones :P

@morgon
Very glad you like it, thansk for the feeback !

@Jeranx
Thx !!

We use DaVinci Resolve (free) for video Editing. Because it is cool and (free), though not as advanced on titling than Premiere Pro for eg, but it has other advantages (especially in color correction).

I made a nice script to convert REAPER tempo grid/markers/regions to DaVinci Resolve Marker so we can quickly edit while being tempo synced (by taking advantage of snap to markers features).

I Ray

I use it too for my little works. Great thing for a free thing. The first I've ever use so I can't compare but even in titling, you have a good amount of options.

Bye

Many thanls for your enthusiasm !
Indeed, we can say than Enny Harlan have more than one string to his bow, as we say in France. Or to his instruments, at least :P

@All
One week already since our last video !

But that was just enough for us to prepare a new energetic music video performance : Ska-Punk !

I hope it will as fun much to watch than it was challenging to do (especially in this short time range :P)

Amazingly infectious...

Comical and very entertaining. I mean, I'm listening to genres I'd never normally be bothered with.

I have sub'd and will keep up with your exploits.

cheers

Well that certainly is apparent in the videos I have watched up to now

What gear do you use for that? I know you can do so much with one camera but it can be quite hard work synchronising all the clips.

cheers,

In short, since the 4th video, the camera is a Sony a6600. Few extra components have helped upgrade the esthetic quality, like a Boling BL-P1 portable light in 5. Electro Swing video. :P
If one day we make a making of you will see, but all this is pretty new, every new video has workflow improvements !

Enny Harlan do the sync and choose the good takes. And he his pretty good at it ! Patience is key there, but as it is something he enjoys a lot to do, in few hours after a recording session he can already show me a first version of the clip ^^ (usually arround 3 a.m. :P). Since Christmas video, I take it form there for color grading and extra tweaks in editing but Enny Harlan is doing all the hard work there :P

I have the A6400, fantastic piece of gear. One reason I got it is that it's one of the few that now have unlimited record times. I don't have the boling but I have 5 or 6 other portable lights that work great.

Thanks for the info X-Raym

Putting the clips together can be fun but it can take an age when you first start sussing it all out.

Me and a band mate came up with an idea for a video, must have been nearly twenty years ago now.

I only had a Minolta DiMage 5 and I think it could only take one minute clips.

But, in the end, that doesn't matter and most of the clips were less than thirty seconds.

The end result looks like we had five or so cameras at the shoot haha!

We basically mimed playing the song. We took along a ghetto blaster to the location, set up shop with all our stuff, including a full drum kit. Passers by must have thought we were nuts.

We spent quite some time there, for a video that takes just 5:40 and we had a ball, expect for the lead guitarist who turned up for the day in just a T-shirt and no coat for in between shoots... I was January and quite cold...

cheers

True, the 6600 is very nice indeed in video.
I still have few things to test with it. It seems that 1080p recording has less rolling shutter effect than 4k. I'll try 1080 for the next video, as we tend to have a lot of motion, and very very few people can enjoy 4k for now.
