Midi overdub ?

Is there a way to do a midi overdub were you only replace notes that are being played? For example, given a midi drum track if I only play snare from the moment I start playing snare all the snares will be replaced and the rest of the midi will stay intact.

The easiest way is to choose MIDI overdub mode and select all note at this pitch (right-click key on piano roll). Record everything and then delete that notes. You can also mute that notes instead of selecting it.
But your question may be a good Feature request.

I don't understand. So I already have a midi drum track and I just want to overdub say "kick and snare" for example. I want the hi hat, cymbals and toms to remain as I lay down a new kick and snare. How to do that for just a section of the midi track, like maybe 4 bars worth please ?

ok thank you, what was your workaround addressing please ?

It seems midi has a long way to go in Reaper. I don't like midi but use it when I have to and I struggle a lot with what I consider basics. It seems I'm not alone.

Yeah, midi needs more love.
Alternatively you can also mute the notes.

You're a genius ! That does exactly what I need to do. That works great and is easy to do. Simply set Record Mode to auto-punch selected items, right click over Record Arm and pick midi overdub, select the kick and snare notes in the midi editor and delete them (or not), set up the loop, arm the track and record. You have saved me a ton of time and I really appreciate it. WOO HOO. Karma boost too infinity applied. :-)

It is way easier to show, not to just write.
Also you can just mute the notes.
