Default what is your favourite, dummy/does nothing plugin?

for "dummy" i mean, as i read somewhere, a plugin that is in the fx chain to keep an order in thechain and save the all chain as a preset and later substituted by something useful. What is your favourite does nothing? probably there might around a plugin that just ables to do notes? or simply does nothing at all would be owsome, .

Thanks!

Is this simply meant to act as a spacer of sorts?

Lol. Clearly.

Do you also have a JSFX with a bunch of sliders with nothing in the block or sample section? Useful for clients that want to be too involved. Move a slider, "yeah, that sounds punchier don't you think?"

I'm joking, but I might write a JSFX for that purpose (just in case).

In all seriousness, the spacer idea is super useful. Thanks!

Since I'm mostly a MIDI user, I automatically add reaControlMIDI. However, it's not a dummy plugin - it is very useful. The MIDI monitor and everything else works great and is highly useful.

Thank you for that, Jon! I renamed it in the FX-window with an "empty" name and achieve exactly what is shown in the quote below. It works with e.g. "bypassing FX in slot1" and can be saved within a FX-chain. Cooool!

I don't see the point...you can add a plug in anywhere in the chain, any time.
Why save a space ? And how do you know that's the spot to save ?

I've actually been thinking of doing this for some time. Maybe over the summer it can be a summer vacation project learning to code and skin a simple plugin that does nothing. (I already have a detailed idea of how it will 'work' and look).

My plugs are all pretty useful.

The dummy that does nothing is usually the guy sitting at the desk.

Frequently true, but knowing when not to do something is what distinguishes the pros from the amateurs!

I find that this plugin really boosts my productivity and makes my mixes sound more open and punchy.

Ha ha! Yes! I just found and installed it. Renamed it ---*---. Works like a charm. The customer comments at the bottom of the product page are priceless.

Why would you want this? You can always put any plugin anywhere in any chain. Why would you need a spacer?

. . . From this thread where many others feel the same way about the inability to leave empty FX slots between plugins in Reaper:
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=192783

Now in Reaper if I start my mix with the Console emu plug on every channel (as I'd like to), that means that every other plugin I add during the mix will first have to be inserted after the Console emu plug and the dragged up above it . . . why?!?

At the very least, if we can't leave empty FX slots above plugins, how about we gain the ability to place new plugins inbetween existing plugins when instantiating? I could live with that . . . though leaving empty FX slots between plugs would be preferred.

For the time being I'm going to create a dummy JS plug as someone suggested and create a new template that have like eight of these in a row followed by my Console emu plug on every channel - but it's ludicrous that I have to do this on a major DAW in 2017.
And here . . .

I see the "problem" but, doesn't the solution of creating a dummy plugin just make things worse?

I could see how people would want to be able to leave empty slots, but dragging and dropping a plugin to where you want it, isn't exactly much of an issue. I guess maybe for people like that guy that always want a particularly plugin to be last in the chain, it could really be a bitch though.

It might be easier to make a sort of "new track" template that creates a hidden track with that plugin on it, and a send straight to it. The downer from that, is that when you would send normally to a buss, you would bypass that, unless you made it visible and sent that one. But, that's not such a big deal, especially if your buss is also setup the same way.

At this point Saffire Mix Control While it does load the driver. I have never had any use for the actual UI as headphone mixes i create within Reaper itself. I am still irritated that It will not allow me to shut down my Kernal in Windows from any potential outside attack on my system, I Did reverse engineer the app enough to allow Linux to still be able to use it. at least so I can connect my Behringer ADA8000 to it via light pipe. The preamps on the Focusrite are trashed. I may try to revitalize it as I did like it when it worked. I was on the second update of windows 10 that it automatically started failing, and sounding bad. Its still serving a purpose.

If the drivers could stay supported if only for security reasons, it would allow some young kid who cant afford a new rig and computer to enter into digital recording This is my major dislike about planned obsolescence, and EOL schedules that break hardware from working through code ala M$. not accusing this company of anything similar mr Focusrite, dont get your panties in a twist. I save all my old recording gear to teach young musicians and sometimes sell them older gear that gets them started, on the realities of DIY recording. True DIY, not like they want you to now with every thing iun an app. More like, recording and dissecting a sound and how one could use it, or getting that old school tape compression on tracks by actually recording to tape and bouncing it back to digital. When they are ready to upgrade and get newer stuff I just ask them if the stuff they got from me is still in good condition and clean, Ill buy it back at what they bought it for so it can go to the next kid. The only tech I avoid is USB 1 except for synths or midi controllers. its too slow otherwise.

Firewire Saffire? Same with regard to the headphones mixes, was the same with my old EMU interfaces software that had the same feature, never once used it.

I chose Firewire when USB was too slow too, but have recently updated to USB 3 interfaces (Focusrite 18i8 and a Tascam Model 12) because Firewire support died on its arse, both within Windows 10 and from Focusrite themselves. I got fed up trying to get it all working and harassed Focusrite.

In case you want to upgrade and arent aware, Focusrite offer a 50% trade in for their old Firewire interfaces.

Detailed it all here - https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=249228

Hello me of the past. This can be useful for some action commands that reference specific slots.

So, you could leave a bunch of spacers, that leaves your clipper in slot 10 or something, and if you want to add other fx before the clipper, you just replace a spacer, and you don't break your thing that was referencing the clipper in track 10.

I hope your past self isn't so rude as to not thank you for answering his question. I've never even thought about this before, but couldn't you use almost ANY plugin and just put it into its bypassed state? I still don't see the need for a dedicated plug for such a purpose.

I suppose you could. But this one might be faster to load, especially if it's for a template you have, and it will load quickly if you're just inserting it, and you could give it a default name like [-----] so that there's no confusion and you know what it is, and that would just be faster to load.

My past self unfortunately no longer exists, but I can presently thank my future self for it's past help, so that should be ok.

This is serious stuff.

In audio school we were told this story:

An audio engineer on a cruise ship had a special channel on his mixer with a big fat RED fader knob. This was the fader for the special occasions. There always was somebody: TOO loud, NOT loud enough, you name it.
"Just move this fader but be careful. We don't want to interupt, you know?W
Always made the "clients" happy that way.
Just sayin.

That would be a plugin I wrote. A dumb one that did nothing but maybe crash the OS.
