those tabs are temporary and do look like adobe's tabs
horizontal tabs are easier to read, height should be controlled by the theme.
yup it's lighter than mark one, which is way too dark for me
I'm slowly starting to turn this into a theme, but don't expect anything soon.
I'll try and make 3 versions :
-flat : no gradients (except for the meters), flat buttons
-mixed : kinda like the mockup
-gradientfreak : for the gradient lovers

brice after rereading your proposals I'm tempted to give all this a + 100, like aldi, but I always need some further reflection I guess, so

hey Brice,
I see you're really bizzy
In your earlier sketch I saw a glimpse of the fader area that was simpler than the one you use now. I think these 'new' ones are too much. Of course I can simply get rid of the .png....
A second hesitation concerns the use of colors. I think the button colors are nice and brice/bright (esp. the crystal symbol is cute) but do you think the combination of those brights with the darker tones of the tcp background is suitable?
As for the rest: can't wait....

earlabs: guess you'll have to make a mod if you want different faders
about the colors, it's only because I work with a different color profile, colors won't be as bright in the end.
edit:
here's how it looks
(oh and a new idea, vu-meters behind the track name)

Fantastic. Elsewhere somone made a great point that because you can't get a view of the FX chain in the TCP then you have to have the mixer up even if the rest of it is redundant.
This just deals with so many things in a very elegant way.

I love pretty much all of this, and think it would ease Reapers workflow - especially the docking of Item Properties!

no, it's just a question of leaving the right .png out of the directory.

Brice,
curious to know just what the 5 knobs under the reaEQ in track 2
would/could be.
definitely like the way the transport bar is coming along(cpu-hd meters at hand)
over all, this is looking incredible.
don
by the way those A-B buttons on the fx would be very cool indeed.

Brice,
Excellent work my friend,as I said before great ideas.
I love this theme, its very ergonomic and the graphic design is very 'holistic' as opposed to been just a mish mash of other peoples ideas. well done

Been there... but one further - make the meters appear as a color differential behind the waveform itself, of a user-defined size - either similar to what we have now quad left, or all the way across if someone wants to bling Reaper out to impress a client with 24" rims....
This would:
- further reduce clutter on the TCP;
- utilize the fringe area of the waveform display, preserving that area so you can keep your visual/audio bearings, while further utilizing that space in a non-intrusive way
- would add a unique feature to Reaper as well as give it a potentially novel look, while still being imminently functional.

Bruce! Oh my GOD!
This is brilliant! It's the better skin ever! (respect for all of you who made skins before). But I would like to know something, is this already done or what? I can make all those windows right now or are they propositions? (sorry for my ignorance)... If REAPER V2.0 comes in this way it's gonna blast every semi-daw (you know which they are) out there!...
P.S. Is there a way I can put my dock on the left side of the screen?

Thanks for that quick answer Brice! but I have seen before this left-side-docker thing (I don't remember the post), can I achieve this?
By the way... are you running Vista?

no side docks in reaper right now, so no you can't.
yeah I'm running vista, but what does that have to do with anything?

hi, didn´t read all but saw in the beggining that its about wanting a little changes in the ui ,so..
the fx chain, and how its working. don´t think i have a solution but its a little strange, i like chains, im not very much into seeing the vsts´gui in the same window, too much space used.
what im doing now is docking all fx chains and have the vst´s floating , but their gui still go to the fx chain window when they are closed, this and the non same theme color fx chain windows have , makes a bit strange. Maybe , since the chains are docked at the botton, the ableton way could be interesting,... or not, i see the mention to tabs , that maybe could work, don´t know , just feel there´s room to improve in how chains work and look in order to be simple.
thanks.

It's not about it looking "good" (subjective), but about decluttering the TCP so what is on the TCP is more readable. The assumed notion is that the meters "of course" have to be on the TCP, because that's the way everyone has always done it.
It's subjective and not a competition.
What I'm visualizing isn't a "meter graph" overlay, but that the waveform shape itself changes color per level left>right for a certain area on the left side of the track display - so that the waveform display itself is the "meter".
In otherwords, the borders of the "meter" is the waveform itself.

Chip, besides the increased computing power needed to update the display, I think it would be very chaotic to look at - even nauseating.
Another way of displaying the meter, could be vertically in the background of the track, but I still think we're better off with either the way it is now, or the way Brice suggests it.
EDIT:
Also, play position may cause problems with the whole horizontal meter idea - look at this screenshot and try to imagine how it would look.

Beautiful graphics... but personally I'd prefer Cockos to put their time into making things like the inspector actually be more useful - and allow me to normalize or change volumes for multiple parts at once etc.

I do not see why it would take anymore power than it does now. As far as "nauseating" - that's subjective. It sounds like you're thinking I'd want it to go all the way across the screen, I'm just talking about effectively an equivalent amount of area the meters presently use; while reducing the TCP width an equivalent amount.

That's fair - it's of course subjective.
My driving impetus is reducing the complexity of areas where you're required to click on things. Anything that allows the TCP to be reduced in complexity while not sacrificing usability is a big plus to me; as far as I'm concerned, I don't even look at the meters...
Dead link?

Brice, every time I check this thread I find myself loving the design more and more. You've done a great job with it. As happy as I am with the current layout and design of Reaper, this would put it on a whole new level.
And I'm already looking forward to skinning it.......
++1 for your concept
and
++1 for getting it implemented.
The only downside is that I foresee needing 2 large widescreens to take full advantage of it..... OK, maybe that's not a downside ....
hm

- inline midi editor
- project bin
- probably a few tweaks ...
about the inline midi editor, I could add velocity meter in the tcp, and when adding a note with the mouse, the mousewheel could set the velocity while while clicking and holding.
