Default Amber of the Land - Voyage on the Briny Waters (programmed aimless prog metal)

On Bandcamp

Also the first time I've had original art for a piece. Woo- it's fully programmed, of course. Mostly similar mix to what I usually do as well. It's somewhat stream of consciousness in its arrangement I guess? I know some people can't stand old Opeth for that reason either, haha. I'm sure there's lots of room for criticism!

My output's been slow as of late so I don't know what's coming next.

I burnt out on Opeth and similar bands after a long time of being a fan, but still like to hear others make similar music.

Two thoughts; I'd slow the intro to half time and get more of a dynamic from the keys. And secondly the snare sounds like an under-tuned piccolo on my monitors. If anything I always over process my snares and they get lost in the mix.

Otherwise I think it sounds fine, even if it meanders a bit. Last serious band I wrote with had an 11 minute track, which was 80% death metal and the rest ambient/soundscape kind of stuff.

Enjoyed listening to it, thanks

Piccolo. Hahaha that gave me a good laugh. Yeah, not too happy with the snare. Glad it didn't bore you to tears, though!

Doing metal while avoiding the typical guitar habits and muscle memory problems (my fretting hand is paralyzed in the same position since 2005) is a neat exercise. No problem with snare here, heard worse in actual studio recordings - guitars are still not quite there realistic-wise. Which is good, opposite would be terrifying.

Solid composition, lack of actual guitaring saved everyone from the dreaded Johhny B Goode solos. Piano came out a bit Nine Inch Nail-ish. And it IS audibly less aimless than Morningrise era Opeth, those really were like sixteen songs in one.

To be fair, I'm still using Shreddage 1, the SFZ version. I'm sure if I invested in the latest and greatest and learned the ropes I could do something more convincingly real. I think I'm happy with this.

I love this kind of stuff. I'm just getting into the programmed MIDI guitars myself (I use Musiclabs RealEight instead of Shreddage). I've loved Dream Theater for years, Symphony X, etc. Yep. More, please.

Nice work. I think the guitars sound pretty realistic and certainly not fake enough to be distracting. It's always hard to judge when you know it's fake. If I didn't know I don't know if I would even realise. The rest sounds good too. The mix is clear. It does sound a little aimless in the mid section, but thats not uncommon for the style.

Actually I just checked out your Rusted Earth project - I like it a lot! Heavy, but lots of dynamics, too.
