Looks like the script made a new portable install in a wrong directory, that explains the rescan of plugins. I'm guessing that's due to REAPER being run as admin, which I've never done. You can probably just delete that new folder (Portable Programs folder inside the original portable Reaper folder).

I don't use Windows a lot, so I'm not really sure how its permission system works. I tried creating a portable install in "Program files" and also moving an existing portable install into there. Both approaches give me a tons of permission problems. Why not just use another folder?
i moved it all back to the C drive. Still has the same problem. Maybe some left over permissions issues? I wonder how I can reset the permissions to default and start from there.

this is very likely not an issue with your script.

Did you check out all permission-related preferences in the portable folder settings? There's a good chance that the permissions carry over when copying files. Again, I'm unfortunately not very fluent with Windows...

There's also still a chance that the issue you're having is completely unrelated to permissions... Best way to check would be to make a clean new portable install and try updating with the utility there.

why does it ask to save project and then show that it's loading a new project and then closes?

Default UX Alteration Request

Hi! Still loving UU, soooo good.

However, I have a request to change the order of the update process for users.

Currently, the UX steps proceed thusly:
  1. Select new version to install
  2. UU downloads installer
  3. UU asks for confirmation to install
  4. UU installs new version
This requires the user to wait around for the download to complete, which goes against the whole point of Update Utility, which is to make the update process less laborious (imo).

Much better imo would be to swap steps 2 and 3 so that the user can confirm everything up front:
  1. Select new version to install
  2. UU asks for confirmation to install
  3. UU downloads installer AND installs new version

that saves a few seconds, but makes perfect sense and is a quicker process. Good thinking!

Makes sense. I initially thought that the user might want to continue working during the download. But I guess no one really does that. Added to my TODO list.

Thank you FTC!

Given widespread broadband and the small size of Reaper installers, it's for the best.

I have a problem with Update Utility since Reaper v6.71 I think. It always shows "initializing" and doesn't do update of Reaper. I don't want to install Reaper from scratch, it was very difficult to set all the things up. Reinstalling of Update Utility didn't help. Maybe some string in reaper.ini that has to be looked at? Please help me, I so used to this great utility!

If you want, I could install it for you remotely.
It's just 3 of 4 clicks.

Not sure installing reaper from scratch would even make a difference due to how the script works. If you haven't restarted your PC in a while, try that first.

Otherwise:

Can you go to your Temp directory (should be something like C:\Users\<Your user name>\AppData\Local\Temp\) and delete any files that could be related to the utility? (These files contain "uutil", for example "reaper_uutil_step.txt").

Hmm, might also be a permission issue, where the script can not create these files in the first place... I'll think about it some more...

Does your script save anything to reaper-extstate.ini file? If yes, then another place to check.

It does, but I doubt it's related.

Sorry if this was asked before, I looked around and couldn't find anything

Is it possible to do this with a portable install of REAPER? I'm on OSX 11.15

My REAPER is located here in this path:
/Users/Shared/REAPER\ Shared/REAPER/REAPER.app

However, when I update using the script, it installs in the standard path:
/Users/alejandrohernandez/Library/Application\ Support/REAPER

I'm excited for this, tho. It's beautifully done. Thank you so much, FTC!

Hmm, I tried updating a portable MacOS install and it still works for me.

My first assumption is that it might be a permission issue.
Did you give full disk access permission to REAPER and the terminal application ?

If that's not it, please send me a startup log and we'll go from there.

Yes, I made sure full disk permissions are given to both terminal and REAPER.

I attached the changelog.

Thank you so much for looking into it! 💙

I replicated the installation on MacOS 10.15 and noticed one interesting thing: In you log file it says:

Code:
Starting: /Users/Shared/REAPER\ Shared/REAPER/REAPER.app
while in mine it says
Code:
Starting: /Users/Shared/REAPER\/ Shared/REAPER/REAPER.app
The space character is correctly escaped on my system. (That's a space character in the " Shared" folder name, right?)

Maybe that has something to do with MacOS 11.5? I might be able to test it this weekend on a friends mac.

One quick thing you could try is removing the space from the folder name (or replacing it with some other character). As it is a portable install it shouldn't really affect anything and you can change it back later.

If you attempt to update again, please enable "Log to file" prior to running the update. That log file has quite a bit more valuable info.

Ohhh. I think it has something to do with that.
Just noticed it created a folder called "REAPER\ Shared" inside my Users/Shared folder:

I changed the folder name to "REAPERshared" without the space and it now works yaaaay.

This is so awesoooomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee FTC! Thank you so much.

Interesting... didn't know about the "Docs" folder. Would have to be optional though, at 22MB the manual can be larger than REAPER itself lol

Be perfect execution of this would be if it would keep the manual at the same version as Reaper

Hmmm, can you download old versions of the user guide somewhere? Otherwise it would be only possible to add the latest when updating.

This script is great, thanks. I have a small issue, which is kinda strange. Realimit doesn't get installed or rather is deleted after the install, so I get prompts for the missing plugin when I open projects with it on. Any idea why that could be? I'm on Windows 10.

Did you try updating without the utility and it works?

The only utility related thing I can think of are post-installation scripts.
You could make the utility delete realimit after each install if that is what you want. Check the Scripts folder in your resource path. Post-installation hook scripts start with "__update", e.g. "__update.bat".

But probably unlikely to be the cause to your problem, as you probably didn't randomly create a script called "__update" that casually deletes realimit...

I think I figured out the problem. So I've had this problem with a hanging reaper.exe process without being able to terminate it for a very long time. And obviously I needed to restart Reaper before I could update the normal way, cause the system was hogging the .exe file. So the utility couldn't overwrite it.

The cause for the process hang was a MIDI controller, that I disconnected now and apparently it works. So two things worked out today.

Just noticed that I had 7 unmounted drives still present in macOS Disk Utility, all Reaper install images that hadn't been ejected properly by UU. Please take a look at the macOS ejection code and ensure installer images are being ejected completely.

Interesting, do these persist through restart, or have you not restarted in a while? Anyhow, volumes should now be ejected in v1.8.5 (instead of unmounted), this should remove the Disk Utility entries. Let me know if the changes broke something.

No, you can also parse names.
For example the latest version is:
Code:
https://www.reaper.fm/userguide/ReaperUserGuide676d.pdf
The previous version is:
Code:
https://www.reaper.fm/userguide/ReaperUserGuide674d.pdf
Based on Web Archive the previous is this:
Code:
https://dlz.reaper.fm/userguide/ReaperUserGuide673c.pdf
Some more:
https://web.archive.org/cdx/search/c...tchType=domain

So basically the path is:
Code:
https://dlz.reaper.fm/userguide/ReaperUserGuide
[version][optional letter, probably versioning a, b, c, d, e, f, g etc.].pdf

Not sure what changed.....I have the latest Update utility from the repo 1.8.5 but I'm stuck at Repear v6.78+dev0149

It tries to update to 6.79 or the dev version but nothing changes after running "successfully"...

Thanks for an ideas.

Hi there FTC!

Is there any reason why, after UU update, Reaper doesn't reload the project that was loaded when the update sequence was triggered? Is there a way to get it to load back?

Reporting that this unmount fix worked for me in macOS Catalina. Thanks again!

IIRC this only works when

1. the script is set to run on startup
2. the preference "General > Startup settings > Open project on startup" is set to "Last active project".

With the new additions in the latest pre I can probably work around 1. (and tell reaper what script to run when it boots).
I guess there could also be a script setting for 2. instead.

It's working again but in future I'll log any issues. Thanks so much !
