Default Upgrading Reaper for Dummies

Congrats on the new upgrade! This being my first Reaper version upgrade a few questions come to mind.

1) What happens to all my custom hot-keys and mouse modifiers? Do they remain or do I have to start all over again (I assume they remain but I just want to make sure).

2) Is there a new user manual that describes all the new functions? Or something more involved than the simple update comments on the website? I probably understand 10% of what I read there. (PS - just noticed the comment about the pending V6 manual)

3) For someone (like me) who's still learning to crawl... does my life get even more complicated if I upgrade or do you think it makes sense to leave well-enough alone for a while. From what I've read, I don't think there's anything new that I can't live without. Especially since all Kenny's videos are still V5-centric. This looks like... it's just another update as opposed to a whole other thing. Other DAWs would allow you to install as a separate entity, allowing you ping-pong back and forth between versions. Is that true here as well?

Just a comment: It's interesting, and somewhat refreshing, to see a major version upgrade that doesn't include all the usual fanfare and cheering and dancing. Is this part of the frugal nature of Reaper? Keep it simple stupid? Pass the savings on to the customer? Anyway... very cool and looking forward to the future with Reaper.

Hey Larry,

I personally installed Reaper 6 as portable. It's kind of the same as Reaper 5 in that regard.. you can only have the one desktop/full install (non portable? whatever you call it), whether it be v5 or v6. If you want two different versions installed together, or even two copies of the same version, you install at least one as a portable install. Otherwise, the one version installs all settings in a common central place (from memory, I believe in AppData).

It might be a good idea for you to install 6 as portable, to start, so you can familiarize yourself with it, but still be able to fall back on 5, if needed. That said, I haven't been able to test compatibility in reaper 5 with a project created in Reaper 6 (I'll try that tonight), so that may be a concern and wonder if someone can answer that too.

I haven't been able to answer question 1 for myself yet, because I'm concerned about that too, so I'm going to just follow along and wait for someone to answer that. I suspect that some preferences (or all preferences) might be lost, since they've changed those up. Hot keys and such, I'm not sure. But I'm curious about all of that as well.

Reaper has export option for most of the important setting, actions, mouse modifiers, etc. Do backups before installing on top of v5. Should be good, without problems.

I always install Reaper as portable because I like having everything from an application in one place whenever possible. So, to upgrade, I make a duplicate copy of my existing portable Reaper installation, then install the new Reaper over the copy of the old Reaper in the duplicate copy. If I recall correctly, this also keeps all my preferences in place after the upgrade. Once I'm satisfied that there are no problems, I delete the old copy and fully commit to the upgrade.

Ok I see that now in the manual. "Portable" is just a word that means you can have multiple versions of Reaper active on your computer at the same time. At first I thought it meant like installing it to a USB drive or something (or maybe that's part of it?).

Thanks!

Really it means that it doesn't spread the install in various areas like registry, appdata, etc. It all sits in the Reaper install folder of your choice. The "portable" term means you could literally take that folder and copy it somewhere else.. another folder.. another PC, even, and it will still work. Because everything is all in there (with exception to VSTs not included in Reaper, of course).

I'll test this later, myself, but can someone please answer if a project saved in Reaper 6 will open in Reaper 5? Thanks.

What Nait said and...

There are a handful of features that require registry entries or writes outside the install folder with non-portable...

1. Auto-creating a shortcut handler so that clicking .RPP files tells the OS to open them with reaper - just have to do this manually if portable.

2. Rewire? or other features during install (I forget which ones) will be grayed out if portable because they require something to be written outside the folder such as registry.

I manually take care of #1, #2 doesn't contain functionality I use so it's a non-issue. So you can install as many portables as you want. Portable is handy because it allows testing vanilla installs when there is an issue, easy to backup, copy, duplicate, upgrade etc. They are also handy for the import/export configuration feature allowing migrating settings between installs as needed.

Ah... Also... Portable keeps the reaper user resources inside the install folder, a regular install will place all user-config files into user's %appdata% folder which is the proper way to do it but can be confusing since that is a virtualized location to the app.

Just for the record, I updated from Reaper 5 to 6 yesterday. I actually had to do some poking around to figure out if I was really in Reaper 6 though, cause everything looked exactly like my Reaper 5 (the theme didn't change, in my case, cause I wasn't using the default R5 theme). All my macros stayed, and custom buttons and stuff. I was pretty happy with that! When I switched to the R6 theme, then I started to see some issues, but it will give me an opportunity to learn how to customize this UI to make it more my own
