Default oly all day

he sits in his shack drinkin oly all day
gazin out the window at the neighbors
he's a little too crazy for the kids sto play with
and a little too lazy to labor
the days drag on and the years fly by
oh they sure didn't do him any favors
uh huh oh yeah
everyone agrees he needs something to do

so he's thinkin and he's drinkin
yep the same old crime
he'll never make it as a poet
he listens to the music blowin through the chimes
but if he's scared he don't show it
9/11 lies oily alibis
they just wont work and you know it
oh yeah oh well
everyone agrees
you'll all find something to loot

and it's oly all day
oly all day

I must have left you
back in the moonlight
I must have left you
in the dark of the forest
I must have left you
with the fools that I followed
I must have left you
on a long road to nowhere
I must have left you

cause it's oly all day

but it aint that bad and he has to laugh
as he's wadin knee-deep through the empties
and if he had a woman he'd do his half
wouldn't have too much and that's plenty
and if he'd clean up well he's mean enough
you shouldn't be for thinkin he's exempt
he's not oh no and everyone agrees
he needs something to do

cause it's oly all day

I must have left you
cause it's oly all day

most o of this song was written in the 90s, but it didn't seem to have much bite... it was clever in places, but no bite

after 9/11, i replaced a couple lines,... added the bridge, too ---"back in the moonlight", "dark of the forest"... that seemed to make the song more relevant

I got to say that if the songwriters and poets quit looking for the truth, it's gonna get very ugly when the reckoning comes

and the reckoning will come

that's just how it works

Coming out of my work cocoon long enough to say that I like the poetry of these lyrics. Yeah, emotion and ambiguity, finely done.

what does your son think of the situation in the US?

I guess he could have got past that, judging from his songs, but...

https://soundcloud.com/wadosy/oly-all-day

you stumble into a hillbilly bar in northern Norway, and there's this white whiskered old Norwegian bachelor farmer up there singing this song

he's pretending it's about somebody else, but you know better, don't you
.

maybe he's knut hamsun's farmer from "growth of the soil"

maybe not

I like both the melody and lyrics. The melody is kind of upbeat but words are al little ambivalent. Overall the song conveys that life may not leave you where you meant to be, but in the end that doesn't mean that you give in. Stylistically, it gave me a flashback to Country Joe and The Fish (Viet Nam era). I like that it doesn't stick to country music formulae, but still nods in that direction.

A long while back you ask what my son thinks about the world situation. I'd say you could sum it up with two words: disbelief and dismay. Extremists elsewhere doing things that are so horrid that it hard to believe, crazy talk at home. Fear seems to make fools. Oh wait... that's what I think. But I'm pretty sure that Shea feels exactly the same.

thank you for listening and commenting, T... pretty sloppy recording all round, I guess, but maybe it's good enough for a demo... although who I'm demoing to is a mystery

.

I've been expecting some kind of national disaster for a long time, but I used to think I played and sang well enough to play for food and a dry place to sleep, no mater what happened...

so, if worse comes to worse, Shea's got that...

I wonder if that theory has colored my taste in music... if you're playing for food and shelter, you got to play stuff that the people want to hear

don't know

.

The song/performance is amusing in a good way, I guess it helps when you really are the character you're portraying. Thats a pretty good rendition of the song too I'd say, its not the kind of song you'd wanna rush or sound too grid fixed.

they tried to drill that into our heads, "write about stuff you know about"

maybe that's why everybody writes sad love songs...

.

I guess this rendition would work for a weirdly comical video... but it would be a weird video...
