Very nicely done! I really enjoyed the vibe of the track, the songwriting, performances, and the intimate feeling of the mix.

The only thing that took me out of the moment a little bit was the reverb on the trumpet. It kind of sounds like it is in a different space from the rest of the instruments. The mix in general sounds like it has a warm, intimate ambience - a space with lots of diffusion and varied surfaces, but the trumpet sounds like it is being played in a space with very hard and bright reflective surfaces.

Overall though, really superb!

Very nice Michael, the vocal is perfect for the style, well performed and sounds great.

Even if it is BiaB the drums, bass, and piano sound great too.

To be honest, the trumpet sounds a little more like a Cornet and kind of lacks a little finesse. It sounds okay as far as what is being played, it just lacks that humane touch and breathiness. It might be a little loud too, in fact turn it down a little and it might work a little better.

Still a great mix Michael. I might add, it's my kind of music.

I see. That definitively could be improved. I in fact do like different rooms for distinct instruments, and never do a common "effect track". This helps to hear any instrument individually, if the (analytic) listener likes to. But I seem to have exaggerated here.

Thanks a lot for carefully listening.

Ooops. You got me!
In fact it's a fluegelhorn sound.

When doing the final mix I found it would be too dark in this style, and I used an EQ to make it sound less muffled.
Perhaps a bad decision....

Aah, okay, that makes more sense. I think a fluegelhorn is fine in a song like this. I think taking some of the brassiness out of it would help.

Also I think the reverb is what's giving it kind of an abrupt starkey sound, being a room verb, it might have some of the same frequencies. I think something a little softer with just a little more tail fadeout might sound a little better.

That is why I initially did perform it with the Fluegel
I'll do an update ASAP.

Nice improvement!

Have you ever experimented with increasing the pre-delay on the trumpet verb?

In combination with rolling off the highs and lows of the reverb, a pre-delay around, say 80-150ms can really keep the instrument "up-front" in the sound-stage, but not lose any of the wonderful sense of space around it.

I find pre-delay really helps to keep lead elements in the foreground.

Thanks for your comments !

As this is a convolution reverb, it does include a pre-delay "natural" with the room recorded.
OTOH, it might be nice to add more.
