Dig into mouse modifiers and you might find some neat stuff there. There are also actions that have "set default mouse modifier action for..." in their name, which you could use to make a tool-based workflow. But it's ultimately slow.

i cant seem to vote there, but i'd love a pencil tool like audacity's - with a paint tool to smooth a curve - but needs to also operate at a less zoomed level than individual samples. need to be able to turn it on/off without extra key/mouse modifiers

Bump!
Bump for this quite basic functionality!
I just had a passage that went from a waveform to zero for 4 samples. A volume automation can't take care of that, since amplified silence continues to be silence.
And stretching audio to fill the gap of a removed spike seems an awkward procedure.
And it's always good to have another tool for a different approach, and the pencil tool is standard in many DAWs.
Plus a "smooth waveform" tool!
(I couldn't vote nor post in that other thread, either.)

I've got a feeling you're not talking about the "pencil tool" in the MIDI Editor (which Reaper has, like most/every other DAW). If I knew what you were talking about I might want one too.
"Would be useful" and "basic functionality" aren't really sufficient descriptions for my poor old brain.

The pencil tool in other DAWs lets you paint the waveform of audio tracks, to correct clicks, for example. You can draw a new curve over the existing curve, and the curve will then look like what you have drawn. A smoothing tool then smoothes out any rough or bumpy parts.

Bump just for the sake of it. It would be nice to see this implemented but since it has now languished for well over 7 years or more it seems unlikely to happen. Shame as there really isnt a way of working round this properly and Reaper is one of very few DAWs that doesnt at least offer this as an option. I miss my pencil and curves....

I don't have too much trouble using the pencil cursor as it is to draw out clicks. We're talking about where you add a volume envelope to an item [Right click item/Take/volume envelope] and then edit that by placing the cursor over the relevant section and redrawing, right?

searching the forum, it seems this keeps coming up
but it hasn't been created yet--the pencil tool--has it?

+1 for this feature. Could, perhaps, be derived from the "Freehand Draw" tool used for creating/editing envelopes.
This feature would probably require a "destructive" waveform editor - which I don't think Reaper is set up for (it's all "non-destructive") - so this could be a big project.
Morgon's suggestion to draw a volume envelope works but only for gain/attenuation. If there is a dropout, for example, you can't fix it with a volume curve.

I may not have wanted to say this in previous years however the pencil tool was the only thing I did miss when I jumped ship from Pro-Tools....
Getting old best to confess..

Just downloaded and trying it out now. The edit window I'm seeing doesn't look anything like the one in that thread - but it does the job!
