Open In Trimmer (similar to Sony Vegas)
Recently switched to Reaper and love it! One thing I cannot seem to locate, or maybe its not in implemented yet is clicking on any media file in the arrangement and being able to open it the trimmer - media editor. Also can you set markers within the trimmer?
Thanks you in advance!

The Media Explorer sort of does what you want.
This is something I sorely miss from Vegas. I do custom edits of music. Trimmer/markers/regions are my secret weapon for slicing and dicing. Vegas "stores" these in .SFK files, Reaper could possibly store them in the "Reapeak" files, but I know little about the nuts-and-bolts.
The Media Explorer in Reaper allows for a watered-down version of the trimmer. No markers, no regions. You can selection a region of the clip (I think the Reaper word for them is "items") and paste them into tracks. The default behavior for the item on the track is to behave like a loop. Stretching it will create more instances of the loop. You can make it behave more Vegas-like by going to ITEM, then ITEM SETTINGS then de-selecting LOOP ITEM SOURCE. Then you can slide the handles around to fine adjust the item.

It might help some if you go to Preferences/Project/Media Item Defaults and set the Loop source options to better suit your way of working.
Looping item source is also available as an action, I have it on my main toolbar so it's quick to switch it on/off even for several selected items at once when needed.

Well, it looks like now it's my turn to explore the forum in search of this primitive, routine, basic-of-the-basics option that exists in Vegas for ages, namely, open-in-trimmer.
From what I've seen I can assume that Reaper devs consider only one direction on your actions with the Media Explorer, i. e. take pieces from the explorer and place in the arrange view. The opposite direction apparently does not exist for all the Reaper folks, both the developers of this DAW and the scripts' contributors. We should just accept it and get along whatever strange it is.

reaper allows us to have two external editors for wav files, and those will load a selected item from inside reaper.
I use Adobe Audition for mine and it lets me do very surgical edits as well as some special Audition functions and then saves the file right back into the project.
If you don't want to do destructive editing on a given wav item, then make a copy of it in the project first and mute the original.

It's not about editing the source file, it's just about selecting another (probably not very distant) piece of it to place as another item in the arrange view.
In Vegas, the preview track is slave to both Media Explorer and Arrange view, so it's a useful intermediate tool. You take an item without going to the Media Explorer, right-click it and choose the option "open in Trimmer" (i.e. in the preview track). And the preview track shows you exactly the selection corresponding to the item within the source file, not the entire file totally zoomed out (let alone playing it immediately!) == Then you can choose some other piece of this file. It is very useful when you need to quickly take some nearby section of the same file to use it in another (maybe distant) place in the Arrange view.

i do wish that the Media Explorer's "Preview Panel" was more like mini-REAPER instance: 1 track, with only the selected item, which could be manipulated just like items in Arrange.
not only would this fulfill the Trimmer FR, it would presumably make zooming, tuning, playrate, etc a lot smoother.
