Default Accessibility: function of "New..." buttons in action list is currently unclear

Hi,

Requesting a bit of UX ironing on behalf of Windows screen reader users.

In the actions list, the buttons to create a new custom action or a new ReaScript are currently both labeled "New...". Visually it's obvious what each of these buttons pertain to, but if using the action list dialogue with screen reader software, it's not so clear. Exploring with the virtual cursor will provide context, but this is trickery that many screen reader users aren't aware of.

Would it be possible to make the functions of these two "New..." buttons clearer using IAccessible accName? My thinking is that if you had something like "IAccessible accName: u'New custom action...'" and "IAccessible accName: u'New ReaScript...'" whilst keeping DisplayText set as it is right now, then the UX would remain the same visually, but screen reader users would be provided with context, negating the need for them to do extra poking around.

On Mac, the VoiceOver screen reader adopts an object based navigation model, so this is less of an issue (as in, if you're using VoiceOver navigation commands then you'll encounter those "custom actions" and "ReaScript" visual prompts anyway).

Thanks in advance for any tightening up that can be done.

Scott

+1 from me.

Would more expansive tooltips for these buttons help with that? Or do Screenreader ignore them?

Nice thought, but tooltips probably aren't the best solution in this case. Every piece of screen reader software handles those slightly differently, and - just to make things even more confusing - there's a high likelihood that a user's custom screen reader verbosity settings will suppress tooltips entirely.

So far as I know, the accName attribute I mentioned in the OP will be read reliably across all screen reader options. Custom verbosity settings would only affect whether the user gets told about the "..." part of the label.
