Default TIP: How to stop ASIO4ALL from taking over computer's sound

This is my first post on the Reaper forum. I was planning to make a youtube video on this, but I figure this is a good place to post this until I learn how to make youtube videos.

I developed this trick while using FL Studio, but it works with all of the DAWs I've tried that hijack your sound card with the ASIO4ALL driver. This will let you use ASIO4ALL in your DAW while watching Youtube or doing whatever, totally seamlessly.

This is for the people who use their onboard sound cards. (in Windows)

You will have to buy two things.

1. USB audio adapter, about $6-$7, looks like a flash drive with an audio in and out.
2. Joiner cable. $2-$15, looks like a Y cable, but it must be one for joining signals. I had one lying around, but they are on Amazon.

You plug the USB adapter in and set this device as your 'default device' and 'default communication device' in Windows.

Then, you plug the male ends of the joiner into the USB device and your sound card.

Then you plug your speakers/headphones into the female of the joiner.

What you end up with is that everything on your computer (besides your DAW) will always play out of the USB device, and your DAW will monopolize the sound card. It will combine the signals, and you will not see anything happen when you open your DAW. It just works seamlessly.

I hope this helps someone, because I certainly think it's an awesome power.

Or you could save some money and just switch the Audio Driver in Reaper's preferences to Direct Sound or WASAPI.

Default I use voicemeeter banana

Try voicemeeter - it's pc only though

I use this to share audio when making tutorial videos of Reaper using OBS.

Also if you just want to watch youtube and such settings > audio > close audio devices when stopped and application inactive (checked), made it so my students can switch between youtube and reaper without loosing sound - using asio4all.

I've used Asio Link Pro for years to deal with this problem; not with Asio4all in particular, but with various Asio drivers. I've found it both flexible and stable.
