Record on playback?

I'm using Reaper with the ReVisit tracker plugin to control some MIDI synths.
Due to the wondrous majesty of plugin delay compensation (or something), if I start recording from Reaper, the first notes in the first ReVisit pattern get screwed up.

If I start playback from within ReVisit, everything is fine.

So I was wondering, is there a way to enable record on the transport without starting playback, so that I can trigger playback from within ReVisit and record the output?

Sorry if this is a really basic problem, just can't seem to figure it out!

Does it not work if you start recording earlier in the timeline?
Maybe even stick a few placeholder notes in there and trim them off later, if it's always the first notes coming out wrongly.
