private server at home connection issues
I have setup a server on my mac and I can connect and use it OK. For other band members I have opened port 2049 on my firewall and given them my ip address and port. No one outside can connect. I have tried an nmap server outside which reports the port as closed, though this may be my ISP shielding itself from probes.
Do I need to open any other ports?
Many thanks
Ken

Does this mac have a fixed IP-Address in the internet and you don't use a NAT router ?

Internally, can other computers connect to the Mac OK? If not, maybe the Mac itself is blocking access. It may also be that the Mac is allowing LAN access but blocking WAN access.

That's not what I asked.

OK. But how will the remote client know the outside IP address of the NAT router ?

Finally got hold of another laptop to test. The answer is no. Its the mac firewall. When I turn it off, outside and internal users can access ok
I have added ninjam as an app in the firewall but not working when I switch mac firewall on. Ninjam is not running from applications folder, I wonder if that is what the problem is?

Fixed!
Many thanks for all the contributions. I really appreciate you taking the time to help.
The issue was fixed by running the ninjam server from the Applications folder, allowing ninjam through the mac firewall, creating a port forwarding rule on my router and giving my server a fixed ip address.
Now I need to learn it use it with my band mates!
Again, thanks kind people
Ken

Great to hear you got it going. Joy of MacOS strikes again .
Hopefully, if anyone's maintaining a "How to run the server on a Mac", this will be made clear (the putting it in the Applications folder bit - I'd never have thought of it as a non-Mac user).
