Default VS-100 as control surface

Hi folks! I'm new to Reaper. Quite liking it so far. I think I've finally found my upgrade and can stop using Audition 1.5 after all these years.

Has anyone had any luck controlling Reaper with a Roland VS-100? I'm trying to use its default Mackie compatibility.

I'm running 32-bit Reaper on 64-bit Win7, the VS's Vista x64 driver (installed in Vista Compatibility mode / Admin).

In Reaper Prefs > Control Surfaces, I've tried Mackie Control Universal and Mackie Control Extender. I set the MIDI in and out to "Control (VS-100)" and click OK. Then I receive this message:

Quote:
REAPER Control Surface Error
Control Surface: Error opening MIDI input(s) and output(s)
I know the VS-100 is available to the system, because under Audition 3 (wretched thing that it is) the VS-100 works fine for switching tracks, sliding volumes, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks.

EDIT:
After a reboot, the surface is talking to Reaper. Most of the buttons do things, though their behaviors are a little surprising.

But I've still got the i/o opening error popping up in a dialog when Reaper boots and whenever I press play or record. Playing or recording hangs until the midi error dialog is dismissed, making the surface unusable for engineering from the sound booth.

Still open to ideas. Cheers.

Make sure that the midi inputs and outputs are disabled and control set to disabled in Preferences/devices/midi. If you use it in control surface mode, often you can;t use them in normal midi/midi learn mode.

...so mostly the V-Studio 100 works as a control surface, with the control set to Mackie Universal in Reaper and the device connected via USB. The fader works and moves itself around as I switch tracks. The mute, solo, arm, and loop buttons work. They all light correctly except for solo. The marker button works and the view/metronome button registers as a midi keypress that I can assign in Actions.

The track < and > buttons have really odd behavior. They change what track is selected but confusing ways, adding and removing tracks from the selected set, and seeming to jump the focused track around wildly.

The wildness of this jumping changes when I alter the "size tweak" setting in the control surface edit dialog. But I can't find a number that makes it just switch focus and selection, a single track at a time, up and down the layout.

Can anyone explain exactly what that size tweak setting means and does? Should I keep playing with it?

I'm having similar problems to the previous two posters.

Everything seems to work fine, except track selection. It behaves very oddly, sometimes it seems to work OK, then it will start selecting multiple tracks, or skipping over tracks.

Could this be something to do with the offset? Does anyone know exactly what this offset does?

I have the same problem changing tracks with the VS-100.
Has anyone found a solution to this?

Going for Reaper soon...

It's still not working with Klinkes program.

I can only switch between track 1 and 9 but nothing inbetween.

Did I miss something ?
