Default CommandPost controller very cheap

http://www.softwareoutlet.com/CLR/p-4253.html seems like a very good offer - I have one of these controllers (paid quite a bit for it) and it enables any key stroke - or string of keystrokes - to be mapped to any of the controller's buttons etc. On the end of a long USB cable it could be a handy thing for some here. And at $10 you can't go too far wrong.

The unit shows up here, http://www.softwareoutlet.com/index.php?loc=clearance
but the direct link is bust. maybe they ran out...

update - some googling turned up this forum
http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=63368
which suggests that the controller won't work in XP - drag...

The above page also has a link back to the manufacturers' site, if you wanna dig a bit.

(I should have asked this earlier)

Art, are you using this thing on a Windows XP system, and are you currently using with reaper?

Well... to be honest, I've not used the CommandPost for quite some time as I have a BCF2000 now, but having mentioned it here and elsewhere, it seemed only fair to ensure that it does actually work (a) with XP and (b) with Reaper.

It's taken me an hour or so of fiddling around but having reinstalled the software - what might be a later version than that supplied with the device is at http://www.focusinfo.com/dynassets/d...nloads/CP2.zip - it started to work, and although I have only assigned one CommandPost button to a function - space - pressing that button causes Reaper to play, so there is no reason to suppose that it would not work in all other respects. Having got this far I shall probably go the whole hog and fully customise it in the next day or so.

The device also appears on the net under "Focus Enhancements CommandPost".

Hmmm... further fiddling indicates there's still something amiss - now I can't make it work on either of my XP machines - maybe it's a hardware problem though the device seems to be recognised in the XP Device Manager.

OK... thanks for checking! [edit] if you can get it working in XP, that would be great, cos there's a bunch of these on Ebay right now going for about US$15.

Right now I'm thinking about getting a ShuttleXpress
http://www.contourdesign.com/shuttle...ttlexpress.htm
just to get the jog/shuttle wheel and some transport buttons.

I'm also seriously tempted by the AlphaTrack
http://www.frontierdesign.com/Products/AlphaTrack.

Feedback on the above welcome, if anyone's tried them.

What's odd is that it does work some of the time on one PC and not at all on the other - and on the whole, if the problem was the driver or the software, I'd expect it to either work, or not work. Hence my suspicion that the device itself is faulty. Unfortunately my Win98SE PC has now been decommissioned and so I can't see how it goes on that. When it does work it's pretty clever, automatically loading appropriate keysets for the program currently in use - even Notepad and Adobe Reader!
