You could set a soft limit in preferences, for example 64, and if the effect has more params than that, show an error/ warning dialog and let the user increase the limit if they want to. Edge cases like that shouldn't prevent the more common, useful cases where you have a reasonable number of params.
That isn't really a valid reason for not implementing this.
