Default Video Editing Tutorial

Is there a good video editing tutorial for Reaper?

I happen to be using an iMac currently and the demos of stuff I had are all expired (FCP, Sony's new thing, Premiere, etc, I'll be giving the Avid Media Composer demo a go pretty soon, all of the other things like Camtiasia and Screenflow have watermarks) so I'll likely be using Reaper for some basic editing with some basic titles for the short term. I mostly just need to see how to do titles and overlays.

All the other free Mac video editors I tried are crashing like nobody's business, probably due to a somewhat old OS, no clue. Of them all, the free ones, Hitfilm Express is the only one so far that isn't regularly crashing.

Thanks in advance.

I can pretty much guarantee you that everything on Jon Tidey's page will absolutely hook you up. He's an amazing member of the REAPER community. Thanks, Jon! I think everything I've learned about video in REAPER is because of Jon lol

Check out Davinci Resolve, too.

Another free one is Shotcut.

I would personally not use Reaper for video editing purposes when such free tools are available and have a better workflow.

Resolve requires the latest and greatest hardware. OP says older operating system so it's not an option.
I've used V12 for color correction and don't enjoy editing in it. Couldn't see myself sticking with it for 2+ videos every week.

Where Reaper has come in handy for me is adding a voice-over on an existing finished video... so, using another NLE to prepare a video production, then adding the ducked audio track in Reaper... its easy and clean.

Cheers.

I've tried a lot of video editors and right now I'm using Movie Studio Platinum 12 (64-bit). I'm getting good results with it, but there are many things that I don't like about it.

I did get serious about using Reaper a while back and once I caught on, I really liked it, you really can do a lot with it. The only real problem I had is I couldn't get the final render quality as good as I can with Movie Studio Platinum 12, so I finally stopped using it.

If I could get the render quality up to Movie Studio levels, I'd be using Reaper all the time.

I haven't looked at your videos yet Jon, but I did bookmark them. Do you or anyone else know how to get good video quality out of Reaper? Mine have kind of fallen short.

usually a matter of the codec and bitrate used. OSX version has more options there.

I can say with certainty any issues with my footage are lighting and camera and not reaper ruining it on export.

Thanks Jon, I'm mostly video capturing the screen, and the software I'm using at the moment is "Movavi Screen Capture". It basically captures everything as mp4s. The quality of these mp4s is pretty good, at least they look great in Reaper, as well as other video playing software.

I don't remember off had the exact process I used with Reaper, but I do remember rendering/saving the the vid in Reaper as a Video (LCF) file. Actually I tried them all.

Then I took that file to "Handbrake" to process it, and I think it was a mp4. It's been a while now.

At any rate, the quality would never turn out as good as I got with Movie Studio, and I think I might be missing something.

Thanks a lot guys, all the advice is appreciated.

It turns out that iMovie was free so I grabbed it and for what I'm doing it's more than enough and it's stable and actually not a bad editor at all. Better than I expected.

So I'm using the free APowerSoft Screen Recorder for screen captures and iMovie 10 for editing. Working great so far.

Once again, thanks for all the good advice. You guys are really great.
