Default WINE File|Open menu issue

I'm running the 64 bit version of Xubuntu Bionic Beaver and have seen this now on two separate fresh installs. WINE installs and most stuff works, BUT any attempt to perform a Windows "File|Open" will instantly blow WINE up and terminate the Windows program.

Also, from digging around I found that just issuing the command "wine explorer", which ought to bring up a Windows Explorer, blows with the very same errors.

Anybody know what the cause/resolution is for this?

Here's an example of attempting to launch Windows Explorer:

$ wine explorer

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 003b), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

So everyone but me can open a terminal window and issue the command,

wine explorer

and it works?

Did you install more than just wine-stable or devel versions? I've tried both and got the same results.

I even installed the Windows version of REAPER and it closes instantly for me if I simply click "File|Open". I can drag a song onto it and it loads it OK though.

Same thing with Winamp. Drag-n-Drop works, but "Play|File" vaporizes.

That sounds like some error on your system, don't think that can be regarded as normal at all. In fact I've never personally seen that behaviour.. Maybe some packaging error, check with your distro support?

I'm using the package that is native to Xubuntu, and I've seen the exact same behavior twice on new installs. Should I kill the native one and try installing the one from Wine-HQ?

You can try, though I'm not familiar with the details of xubuntu and what the winehq one does (maybe be careful about your package manager). FWIW, wine explorer works fine on my system.

Thanks for the input. I may leave it as is, because I've got a lot of Windows plugins working just fine. It was a sampler that I installed that first alerted me to the "File|Open" problem.

Interesting thing is, if the software doesn't use native Windows file browsing, then it will work. The 16-channel soundfont player VSTi "Phenome" lets me navigate to files, but uses it's own file browsing. Same thing with a programming editor I use and a visual programming language for Windows. It's only when calls are made through the native Windows .dll that does file browsing, and those will vaporize the program or plugin instantly.

If a certain hardware or software does not run under Linux, contact the appropriate manufacturer.
The "do not support under Linux" is a very old problem.

Maybe it'll change things. ;-)

Well, that wine can't run the explorer application it bundles, seems to indicate a distro problem

Yeah. Not directly related to the problem. SRY ;-)
Meaning only generally one could also ask times. LV2, VST3 ... . :-)

So I now know how this functionality got corrupted.

Using WineTricks, I added "Comctrl32" for an old NNTP newsgroup reader, but there is a bug in WineTricks that adds a global override for the Comctrl32 it downloaded. Removing the global override and leaving only the override for the program that actually needed it seems to have fixed the issue for me. It sure was was a bitch to isolate.

Congratulations! I had no idea how to help you with this..

You do know that you can use different wineprefixes for different programs?

I knew that you could, but never tried it since I've only got about five Windows programs that I haven't replaced with Linux versions. They all work, but use their own file browsers. It was trying a Windows sampler in REAPER that made me aware that Windows Explorer calls for file browsing were screwed up.

You can install the Winehq versions by the way, just in case you want/need to. It works fine fur *buntu distros and should automatically remove the distro version you have already installed.

I am in fact now using the WineHQ repo. It was one of the diagnostics that finally revealed that WineTricks had added a global override when adding a Windows .dll or component.

My kid and I went through the process of setting up a Wineprefix from WineHQ's repository. It didn't initially exhibit the issue of vaporizing apps on a File|Open, but after having WineTricks grab comctrl32 for use with one single app that needed it, suddenly all apps would blow on a File|Open. Backtracking led to the addition of an unnecessary global override that was made by WineTricks. Clearing that corrected the issue, but I left the WineHQ repository setup, so I should be getting updated from them from now on if I understand it all correctly.
