Default Standard pan control operation

I am having significant difficulty operating the round pan control in the default track and mixer views. I see in the videos very smooth operation of this control but never catch how they are doing this. I know clicking the control sets it to center. I try using the mouse with left held down and pointing to the pointer and move around the control right or left but usually the pointer just flies around and it is pure luck I get it set close to where I want. I do not have good fine motor skills so maybe that is the problem. Are there other keystrokes and/or views I should be using?

I have done multiple simple sessions successfully except for the pan track control.

Thanks in advance.

make sure if you are using windows you have the enhanced pointer precision ticked in options.

You could also try altering pointer speed.

Both of these should appear in options for the mouse

In Reaper when trying to use the pan control click the shift key first, this increases precision. When using the mouse instead of trying to drag the button to where you want it simple move the mouse either left right or up dwon to control the button
