Desktop -> Portable
Hello...here is my scenario today.
I have Reaper desktop version installed (and vsts in several folders) on a windows10 laptop and the laptop might breakdown any day (off topic). So I want to transfer reaper to a new win10 computer. I have read and viewed video and this is my conclusion of what steps I need to take to make the transfer as smooth as possible.
Preparation
1 Move all VSTs to one new folder under \Reaper (and update vst path e t c)
2 Use the Export function från Reaper (.zip) and save this on a SSD
3 Copy my new vst folder under Reaper temperary to SSD
Making it portable
4. Install a portable version of Reaper on a external SSD
5. Move vst folder under \Reaper
6. Import the .zip fonfiguration
7. Reaper should now work and look the same as my earlier desktop version
8. Have I understood the steps correct?
9. Is there any drawbacks with using portable Reaper vs Desktop if I want to stay with portable version in the future?
10. I am using SWS, is there any config-file I need to copy to SSD?
11. If I have custom presets saved in Reaper in Valhalladelay (chosen from reapers dropdown) are they included in the configuration export?
The reason why I only want one root-folder is to make things easiers (otherwise I need to re-create all paths and folders the vsts are located in)
And yes I am noob. May thanks compadres!

Hey there Hellsing!
In reply to #8:
I think that what you have stated will work!
In reply to #9:
Something else to consider, is that some vsts, while most are kept solely within your vst folder, have external files that are copied to other places on your computer (i.e. presets for a plugin being stored in \Documents and not with the preset in your, (i.e. "Steinberg") folder), so I would watch out for that. Another thing, is that depending on where you store the Reaper folder, (I assume since you want it to be portable, you'll just be dragging it off your external drive on to the desktop of another computer), is that all of your vsts, (rather than the small reaper folder), will be taking up space on the C: drive, rather than on another drive in the computer, which can slow things up considerably depending on how much space you have, and how big the Reaper folder ends up being.
In reply to #10:
I think all of the SWS stuff is enclosed in the Reaper directory.
In reply to #11:
I think that all of those, if they are saved as Reaper presets, and not ValhallaDelay presets, should be included, although they may be stored in the separate Reaper folder, which is located in: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\REAPER
Overall, I think your logic is correct, and everything should work, although personally here is what I would do:
1.Create a folder on your desktop called "All Reaper" or something similar
2. Take the "Reaper (x64)" folder from, (C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64)"), and move it into "All Reaper"
3. Take the other Reaper folder, from, (C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\REAPER"), and move it in there
4. Make a "VST" folder within, "All Reaper", and copy all of your vsts in there
5. Export config from the preferences menu in reaper, and then copy that into "All Reaper"
6. Check "\Documents" and make sure that none of my vsts have information stored there, or anywhere else on the computer, and then drag those into "All Reaper"
7.Zip up "All Reaper", and drag that onto my external ssd
I would personally then install everything as a non-portable install on the other computer, but obviously this is up to your preference. I would definitely make sure to check and make sure that all of your vst data, (i.e. the presets that may be stored in "\Documents", and other folders), is collected. Sometimes vst's will not allow you to re-route where the presets or other data is stored, thus I feel like there may be some issues with that, (hopefully not! lol)
Hopefully this helps!
Let us know how it goes!
Best Wishes,
-Mac

thx for a great response, cUdOs!
Yea Im a bit concerned about the plugins that spread files all over the place. I dont understand how copying e.g the vst-stuff under my win-profile can work if I put it in the \Reaper folder? Or do you mean I then create the exact same path on the SSD so the filepath is remain the same for the actual vst being run in reaper?
I wonder how other people handles this that uses a portable reaper installation.. I doubt that the all files copied during all vst-installations (some must be installed yes) for each vst can be customized to One folder and no other dependencies (under Reaper)...

No worries!
I don't really understand what you mean when you say, "I dont understand how copying e.g the vst-stuff under my win-profile can work if I put it in the \Reaper folder?", but judging by what you say after, I think I get it;
In the Reaper preferences, under "Plugins -> VST", you can choose your vst plugin paths (there can be multiple), so you can just tell Reaper to find all of your vsts, within your i.e., "All Reaper -> VST's", folder!
As for all the files that are installed during vst installations, most of the ones I've used in my experience, when installing, allow you to choose your install location. The thing is, is that while you may choose, i.e., (C:/Program Files/ Steinberg/ Vsts), sometimes they will put other files on your computer in other locations, that you can't choose (i.e. Documents, like I said before).
What I would do is try manually moving everything into the "All Reaper" folder, direct Reaper to locate your vst's in that folder, and then if one or two plugins don't work, just reinstall them!
Best of luck!
