Default allow users to use (toolbar) buttons in TCP/MCP?

White Tie, it is really awesome you mitigate users' experience with theming. Is it possible to somehow hack the system, so it would allow users to use (toolbar) buttons in TCP/MCP?

That
is pretty much the only interesting use for me, right now, if possible.

We discussed something like this a few years ago

set TCP toolbar_buttonX [X X X X]

... where "toolbar_buttonX" corresponds with a PNG of the same name, numbered 1-99, or something like that.

Same with MCP, trans etc etc.

We all immediately saw how chaotic it COULD become, but agreed that it would be awesome nonetheless

There is no way it would be chaotic, very few people mod or make themes anymore, you want chaotic, go back many years and look for the wood themes period of Reaper history.

Mate... I know about ugly-ass, chaotic themes

And I agree that theme development has stalled a bit... Once all the themers had finished cloning other classic daws, only the truly original themers were left to innovate.
They still come and go, but it's harder than it was, for sure.

But back on topic, last time the topic of "toolbar buttons, anywhere and everywhere" came up, it was quickly deduced that one could go pretty nuts, ie TCPs with hundreds of buttons, MCPs with transports, and transports with faders and panners... Could get out of hand pretty quickly.

Then again, I really miss the big button on the VST/32 master, that said, in bold caps, "EXPORT AUDIO"

That would be first on the list.

EDIT: we need to dig up that old thread

It's not about making themes. You probably don't understand. I mean allowing to add temporary buttons to any track, not every.
So it would be saved with project and used per track.

Actually I fully understood and our discussion was about that entirely, you have to have what we were talking about, then it allows what you wanted via scripting

I'm sorry vitalker, could you give me a use case scenario of this, I'm not sure what you're asking for?

This is the time to plug my feature request for custom Ui elements in Walter, as there's some stuff in this thread covered by it

Okay, you must be talking about something other then Reaper's toolbars, right?

I use all my toolbars, in both the arrange and midi editor. Ha ha, I wish there were more.

So re-reading the 1st post are you talking about track icons?

This is a picture of my toolbar sitting over the tracks. I resized some of the Reaper icons to make this fit.

If limited to 32 slots, it can't get -too- crazy I guess.

Better make it 64 ftw

...

It seems simpler to me to have a dropdown somewhere in the Theme Editor, with 32 slots, labelled "custom 1... custom32".
Each one can list any action from the action list.

Then we can just Walter something like:

set tcp.custom16 [X]

... and have a corresponding set of pngs labelled "custom1.png" etc, that will be displayed in the theme.

The custom PNG can be a button or slider, with the dimensions set accordingly.
It can go in any section of the rtconfig, is mcp, trans, envcp etc.

I have a work-around for this using contextual toolbars in the TCP. I have it setup so that a double click in the TCP area opens up a toolbar with various icons for what I use in that area, like freezing/unfreezing, inserting sends, changing colors etc. It works pretty well and keeps the clutter to a minimum in the TCP area since the toolbar opens and closes when I want it to. I came from SONAR, and while I lied the program overall, the UI was getting to busy for me.
