Default Latency / buffer size

I use the Tascam US-144 (will upgrade to Tascam US-1641, but my question will remain the same) on Mac OS X. I'm used to Windows Vista.

In Vista I could choose between lowest / low / normal / high / highest latency in the Tascam US-144 control panel (=driver). I do not have this option in Mac OS X.

Then how do I choose what latency I want to work with? If I adjust my buffer size in the Reaper control panel, the latency doesn't always adjust. Does the latency compensation automatically know what latency there is, or do I also need to adjust that?

I couldn't find this in the manual (which uses mainly Windows-screenshots).

The latency comes from the buffer size and the amount of buffers. If I understand correctly, in some situations Reaper will automatically set the amount of buffers.

If you have plugins that cause latency, your overall latency will be partly determined by them. This is the more propable cause.

A few examples on the buffer sizes:
- Über-Pro = 32
- Lowest my MacBook's internal can handle well = 64
- Guitar amp sims are still playable = 128
- Reasonable compromise = 512
- Mix very large projects = 1024
- Overly neuroticly safe = 2048

Try and use a value that you find suitable for you and your equipment. Older gear can't go below 256, and I play guitar amp sim with 48 or 64.

Ok, so that's why the latency doesn't always go higher when I set a higher buffer size.

I use hardware monitoring, so I can work with a higher latency. Thanks for your list!

Default request block size?

And with Reaper OS X, do you adjust the buffer by going to
Preferences>Audio>Device> check Request Block Size and then put a number (of samples I presume)?

Or do you adjust recording latency settings somewhere else?

Yes, by now I found out that this is indeed the way to adjust latency. It's possible that the latency doesn't change much, because you can't adjust the amount of blocks (which sometimes changes).
