Default action shortcut

Help I was following Kenny's instructions on how to automate the four point envelope I found the appropriate action, highlighted it and clicked add and tried to add Ctrl + P like he does in his video but when I press on the Ctrl key nothing happens. In fact all I can type in are one number or one letter and then I am told this already exists.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong please?

This combination is used by Preferences dialog by default. You can override it, if you want. Just click "Yes", when Reaper writes about existing shortcut.

Thanks Vitalker.

I see I can override action combination that already have assigned key but when I watch Kenny's video he says "Type in Ctrl + P", (although I can't actually see what he doing) and Ctrl + P magically appear in the box at the top, whereas when I touch the Ctrl key nothing happens and even if I try to type "Ctrl" letter by letter I just get a C in the box and nothing else happens!!!

Any idea anyone how I get "Ctrl" and something to combine this with in the top box?

Ha, just hold Ctrl and then press any other button/modifier.
I suppose this method works everywhere, not only in Reaper.

Yep....sounds like you are letting go of Ctrl before hitting P.

Thank you very much.
I tried everything. Pressed control and then the second key,...
But of course I did not think about holding control and then the second key.

How did you figure that shortcut was going to work? Like all other modifier keys, you have to hold the thing down while you type whatever else. To set a shortcut for an action you literally just perform the shortcut combination that you want to do when you go to run the action.

I watched Kenny Goia's video. That is where he said "type in".

I also looked through the Reaper guide but, unfortunately, no mention was made of holding down the control key, for example, at the same time as another key.
