Default Render items with track fx, as new take

Hi!

I have a track with trumpet phrases, short and longer,
that I'd like to run out to hardware, then print it back.

Anyway I can do this somewhat automatically,
so it play/rec every item and print output as new take? (or something along those lines)

The way I'm doing it is putting the items to be processed on a "virgin" child track (no fx plugins or routing). The parent track might be set to have routings and supplementary fx. It will control the listening level of your track in the mix while you're tweaking it with outboard gear.

Put ReaInsert on the child track and configure the track so that it records its output in stereo/mono as required (track fader at 0 dB). Make sure to also enable "Monitor track media when recording" on that track.

To ensure that the new takes have the exact same length as the existing takes/items, you may choose record mode "record in selected items" and make sure that you have them all selected prior to starting the recorsding process. I'm actually using record mode "record into time-selection" most of the time but this requires to re-adjust the time selection for every item.

Tweak your outboard gear until you are happy with the sound and then start recording into the existing items. When finished, make sure to disable ReaInsert not to have the processed takes be processed again.

The way I print analog outboard to individual tracks/items.
Bypass everything after ReaInsert if any, set fader to 0 temporarily. Arm track, record output (mono or stereo), check monitor track media when recording = get the HW print as a new take.
Fader back to where it was (unless 0), unbypass anyplugins after reainset and bypass reainsert and those before it.

Thanks!
One of those methods should take care of it

It's worth mentioning that you should check if the new takes actually line up in sample-accurate sync with the old ones. Zoom into the waveforms and look if they are absolutely in phase. Else, you'll have to check either ReaInsert's plugin latency compensation (manual/automatic) or further investigate the sample offset of your audio device. With my audio device, I have to un-check "use audio driver reported latency" and had to find out the real latency and then put the corrective value into the field "manual offset - XXX samples" under PREFS -> AUDIO -> RECORDING.

This is exactly why I prefer the parent/child track method

Copy the track's initial fader level to the parent track and set the track to be processed to 0 dB. Then, you can actually listen to the correct mixing levels while tweaking the sounds without messing up any levels. Else, you might forget to either restore the correct track level after the recording or record with the track's post-insert output level (=fader) being set too low (resulting in a new take being too soft).

With Hedas Track Inspector this is a breeze.

OK, I see, you are probably right, G-Sun. I'm not using HEDA's track manager so I found the folder method to be more reliable for me as I tend to forget things rather quickly Basic procedure is essentially the same.
