Default Audio dropping out on playback and renderings

I'm experiencing audio dropouts of about 1 second during playback and on renderings.

I'm on a 2017 12" MacBook with a 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running version 10.14.3.

I'm using the 64-bit version of Reaper for Mac. Also, I have 460GB of 500GB of storage available.

I've been using the various versions of Reaper for the past year, and never had problems with audio dropping out before, but I just upgraded to the latest version or Reaper, v5.965.

I'm mixing a podcast about 40 minutes long, which is about 2x longer than any podcast I've mixed previously (not that I think that would cause the problem).

When I playback and render, the audio drops out for about a second, at different places on different playbacks and renderings (rendering as MP3s).

I found this post in the forum, but didn't see anything about audio dropping out.

My familiarity with Reaper is only basic, and I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting this.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful.

I use a MacBook with no mouse

Isn't that a very new o/s update?

Maybe try general osx optimisations for audio...obviously you could ignore the focusrite specific bits if you don't use a focusrite interface.
