I want a MIDI phrase playback thingie

I want a MIDI phrase sampler of some sort. Trigger my own midi phrases independent of the timeline. I know it's a popular request, and some expensive hosts do that well. But I want something simple soon. Anything available? I am hoping I have missed some free plugin which does that.
