Witch Pig Plugins "scan" but fail and don't show up in FX browser
3 free plugins: http://witchpig.co.uk/plugins.html
Advertised being used on Reaper so they obviously work on Reaper as do all plugins as far as I know, but when I put the VST3 files in the correct folder and open Reaper, which does scans all 3 plugins, they don't load. Then when I go to the VST page in settings is says the plugins failed to scan and lists all 3 that did fail to scan by name. Rescanning doesn't help either. What's the fix? First time I've had any plugin not immediately load into Reaper.

It's probably a good idea to contact Tom directly - email link is on the website - a good opportunity to improve isn't normally turned down by indie developers.

Work fine here.
If you definitely put them in the correct folder (program files/common files/vst3) missing runtimes on your system would be my next guess.

I probably should have specified I'm on an Intel Mac and Reaper 6.73
Macintosh HD -> Library -> Audio -> Plug-ins -> VST3 is the default place but these plugins didn't get placed there automatically. They had to be unzipped after downloading and manually placed in the folder. Not sure why but I do still need to reach out! Of course I am open to more suggestions! Thanks so much!

Manual installation is very typical when using freeware.
Does it work now then?

You are right. I should remember because I've been getting a lot of it but in a lot of cases there for the things I was getting there was an installer and it did place the files for me. Still doesn't work but I haven't tried any different method of solving it but let me know if there is one I should try!

On closer inspection - it's likely they are not compatible with any Apple Computers.
It seems to be only one file, and I know that is a windows .vst3 plugin.
edit: only tried to download the Siberian Hamster.
So - you might just have to try something else instead.

Really? I've downloaded plenty of free stuff and usually when only one format is offered it's VST3 and it always works.

If a developer is only developing on a Windows pc, they typically can't compile for an Apple pc - (maybe with a VM, but still it's unlikely)...
The Hamster is only one file, and that works on Windows. It won't work on Apple.

Windows
Are these plugins for Windows or Mac ?
As far as I remember Windows plugins are .dll files, these ones here comes as .vst3 wich is the same as in Macs, but they got not recognized nor loaded in Reaper.

vst2: .dll
vst3: .vst3
I've just searched about and in a comment on a post in a facebook group, Tom the developer says he has not got a Mac so hasn't been able to compile them for a Mac.
So that's confirmation that these are Windows only plugins...

Likely because you're downloading Mac specific plugs or downloading using the Mac specific download button on a site.
Happy to be proved wrong if you can point to any specific vst with a single file that works for both.

In case it helps, things like "VST3" mean that they comply with what is essentially a standard (developed by Steinway) for digital plugins. In other words, DAWs that can use VST3 plugins, like Reaper, can send and receive data to and from them in a way that both bits of software understand. This is ALL that VST3 really means. If Reaper sees something that it knows is a VST3, it knows what instructions to execute to communicate with that VST3. Conceptually, it's really that simple. What that VST3 does internally is not relevant to Reaper at all, as long as it can send and receive data to and from it in a way that it understands (eg Reaper can receive processed sound out of the VST3, and it can send unprocessed sound to it -- that's an obvious example of what a VST3 might need). This is essentially what VST3 is about. Other plugins (such as VST, or CLAP) use alternative standards. If Reaper complies with the standards for those plugins, it should be able to load those too. Reaper is excellently compliant with many of the standards; I'm sure it's one thing many of us love about Reaper.
But, on top of this, developers STILL need to make Mac or Windows specific programs. This is nothing to do with the VST3 itself, it's to do with the relevant architecture of the computing platform. In other words, Windows programs are designed to run on Windows machines (they will have been compiled for Windows, and may be aware of environmental differences such as file system locations etc too). Similarly Mac VST3s will have been made specifically for Macs with similar considerations to the underlying technical architecture and environment.
Indie developers on limited budgets may only have access to one or the other. This makes things hard to compile and test on the alternative platform unless you have some friends willing to help. Often, communities of Indie developers spring up and work together, so can reach a point where both Mac and Windows versions of a bit of software (anything really, not just music stuff) emerge. Often the core code will be (MOSTLY) the same -- if you write C++ in a standards compliant way both a Windows compiler and a Mac compiler SHOULD compile it. But the objects those compilers produce are different. And it's never really that simple, due to other things like packaging things up for software installers, registering code, interacting with the local widget set, stuff like that.
Anyway, if you have downloaded a Windows only version for your Mac it ain't gonna work!

The side says "Made with C++ and Juce".
So theoretically it could be built for Windows/Mac/Linux. Unfortunately, it is not mentioned which operating system the download is for. The source code doesn't exist either.
