Default Problem with sound from video files playing in Reaper

I should start out by saying I'm using SNOW LEOPARD on a macbook

The problem I'm getting is with the SOUND from video files playing on reaper.
The picture is fine. All searches I can see on video issues relate to the picture so I'm posting this to see if anyone might point me in the right direction as I'm stumped.
I'm using the 32 bit version of Reaper 5.70 (My macbook is an old 2.13 Ghz Dual machine with 4GB ram so 64 bit would not give me any advantage I don't believe)
I'm using VLC 2.0.4 which is 32 bit I think
This problem has been present ever since I switched to an SSD system drive and was present in slightly older versions of reaper also.
If I render the audio by gluing it the problem is the same.
It sounds like very low quality granular synthesis- bits of recognizable sound with constant glitches
Any ideas?
Thanks for your time.

First, let me say I'm so jealous that you are running Snow Leopard. That was the Zenith of Mac OS X. I've got an old G5 with Leopard that I use for a file server, and every time I work with it, I wish they hadn't ruined the look and feel of the OS the way they have since Scott Forstall left. Way off topic, I know.

Did you ever get your issue figured out? If so, how? I'm surprised you didn't get a response. I found this thread searching for why REAPER won't import an audio-only .webm file.

Wish I could help, but thought I'd just give this a bump or get your solution posted here for future reference.
